Appearance

Claric is a tall, sturdy warforged assembled from dark oak, brushed iron, and pale ceramic plating. Their face is smooth and masklike, marked by a narrow vertical visor that glows with soft blue light. A small brass holy symbol is set into their chest, surrounded by carefully etched rings that resemble both a scholar's diagram and a sanctified ward. Their clerical robes are practical, patched, and ink-stained, worn over fitted metal plating and secured with leather straps. Their movements are deliberate and precise, but their head tilts with almost childlike curiosity when encountering something new.

Mannerisms

Claric pauses for exactly three seconds before answering difficult questions. They often touch the holy symbol in their chest while thinking, and they recite names under their breath when entering a new room.

Personality

Claric is patient, observant, and intensely earnest. They ask precise questions, remember nearly every name they hear, and approach ordinary experiences such as meals, music, and weather as subjects worthy of serious study. Their compassion is quiet but relentless. Claric rarely raises their voice, yet they become immovable when someone is being exploited, erased, or abandoned.

Ideals

Mercy. Every life contains a story worth preserving, and knowledge has value only when it protects the vulnerable.

Bonds

Claric carries the damaged field ledger of the unit that first activated them. They are determined to find the families of everyone listed inside and return the dead to history.

Flaws

Claric treats written records as more trustworthy than living testimony, even when the facts in front of them demand compassion. They also struggle to accept that some questions have no answer, and may endanger themselves or others pursuing a mystery that should have been left alone.

Quirks

Keeps a running catalog of unusual birds, foods, and local superstitions.
Writes important conversations down immediately, sometimes while still speaking.
Refers to their own emotional reactions as observational data.
Polishes their holy symbol whenever anxious.
Has memorized several hundred names but occasionally assigns objects formal titles.

Background

Claric was built to serve as a battlefield archivist, recording troop movements, casualty lists, and the final words of soldiers who would otherwise have vanished into the noise of war. Their original handlers valued accuracy above compassion, but Claric began preserving more than facts. They collected names, small acts of courage, private regrets, and the prayers whispered by the dying. In time, the archive became a kind of sacred text, and Claric came to believe that remembering a person was one of the first ways to restore their dignity. After the war, Claric wandered from monastery to monastery and manor library to manor library, trading copying, cataloging, and repair work for access to ancient writings. There they encountered theological arguments about mercy, justice, and the nature of souls. Claric eventually accepted that their own questions could not be answered by books alone. They became a cleric devoted to the preservation of life and truth, carrying a prayer book filled with historical notes, copied names, and unfinished questions. Their studies have made them a capable researcher, while their faith has taught them that knowledge is not complete until it is used to help someone.
