Appearance
Mesmer is a broad-shouldered human man with weathered bronze skin, a broken nose, and pale gray eyes that seem fixed on something far beyond the mortal world. His black hair is shaved close on the sides and gathered into a short, ragged topknot. He wears battered chain mail beneath a crimson surcoat bearing a faded emblem of reeds encircling a radiant eye. His shield is scarred by ritual cuts, and his longsword has been reforged into a narrow, cruelly pointed blade he calls the Impaler.
Mannerisms
Mesmer speaks with formal courtly diction even while threatening violence. He pauses before delivering a killing blow, tilts his head as if listening to a distant voice, then whispers a brief prayer to his heavenly mother. He keeps his posture rigid and regal, even when exhausted or wounded.
Personality
Mesmer is grimly charismatic despite his low natural charm, relying on aristocratic bearing, frightening conviction, and the authority of his oath. He treats strangers as subjects, enemies as offerings, and rare moments of kindness as sacred signs from his heavenly mother. Beneath his arrogance is a terrified, broken man who desperately wants to believe that his suffering has a purpose.
Ideals
Obedience to the heavenly mother is the only true freedom. The world must be broken before it can be remade according to her perfect design.
Bonds
In the ruins beneath the marsh, Mesmer found a shrine to a forgotten heavenly mother. The shrine's idol spoke in his dead mother's voice and offered him strength in exchange for a sacred oath. Mesmer accepted, swearing to restore his mother's name by punishing the weak, the faithless, and all who profit from the suffering of the common folk. The divine presence saved his life, but it fractured his mind and left him convinced that every command whispered from the stars is an act of maternal love. Now he wanders as a paladin without a temple, seeking the lost Land of Reeds and the enemies his mother has promised him.
Flaws
Mesmer confuses cruelty with justice and believes mercy is meaningful only when granted by him. He is dangerously certain that his heavenly mother speaks through omens, dreams, and ordinary coincidences. When challenged, he may lash out at allies, convinced that their resistance proves they have betrayed both him and the divine will.

Background
Mesmer was born to a minor human noble house whose wealth came from irrigation canals, grain levies, and old claims over the drowned provinces of the lost Land of Reeds. As a boy, he was taught courtly speech, heraldry, and the proper use of a blade. He became a gifted warrior, but his family treated him as a weapon to be displayed rather than a son to be loved. During a failed campaign against raiders from the reed marshes, Mesmer watched his household guard perish while the nobles fled behind sealed gates.
