Appearance
A lean male tiefling with warm umber-red skin, gently curled black hair, softly swept-back horns, and pale amber eyes flecked with copper. His tail is slender and expressive, usually curled around one ankle when he is thinking. He wears practical temple robes beneath a weathered travel coat, with a small silver holy symbol at his throat and a polished wooden arcane focus tucked into his belt.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly even when angry, tilts his head as though listening to an unheard chord, and taps two fingers against his holy symbol before casting a spell. When lying, he becomes unusually formal and calls everyone by their full name.
Personality
Mairen is gentle, observant, and quietly irreverent. He treats frightened people with patience, but he has little tolerance for pompous authority or cruelty disguised as piety. He enjoys small mysteries, collects overheard sayings, and is happiest when he can solve a problem without making a spectacle of himself. His curiosity often outruns his caution, especially when magic is involved.
Ideals
Freedom. Faith should guide a person toward compassion, not turn them into a servant of tradition. Every soul deserves the chance to choose what they become.
Bonds
The hillside shrine that sheltered him is his true home, and he will risk almost anything to protect its people and sacred library.
Flaws
He mistakes independence for wisdom and becomes stubborn whenever someone gives him an order without explaining its purpose. He also hides fear behind cleverness, sometimes taking reckless risks rather than admit that he does not understand his own magic.
Quirks
Background
Mairen Quisca was raised in a hillside shrine where his tiefling mother served as keeper of the lamps and his human father copied prayers for travelers. The temple did not treat his horns or tail as an omen. Instead, the elders taught him that a person’s conduct mattered more than the shape of their blood. Mairen took naturally to ritual, memorizing hymns and blessings with unusual speed, but his true gift emerged when a cracked brazier flared blue beneath his hands. The flame did not burn him. It answered him. His first uncontrolled spell shattered a reliquary and sent half the acolytes fleeing into the rain. Rather than condemn him, the temple asked him to study the strange inheritance in his blood. Mairen learned that his magic was not a divine blessing, yet neither was it proof of corruption. It was simply power, dangerous when denied and useful when understood. He left the shrine with its blessing, carrying a prayer book, a wooden focus, and a promise to return when he had learned whether freedom meant escaping every rule or choosing which rules deserved obedience.
“The temple did not treat his horns or tail as an omen.”
