Appearance
Zal is a lean aarakocra with tawny-and-cream plumage, a long dark beak, and a high-collared traveling coat tailored to leave the shoulders clear for flight. When they eat, their narrow jaw works with precise, almost birdlike clicks; when they laugh, the beak opens in a surprisingly broad, tooth-lined grin. Before speaking, they take a small, audible intake of breath and hold it for a beat, as if weighing the cost of every word. A brass-colored scale pattern shows faintly at the throat, a mark of their draconic ancestry.
Mannerisms
Before answering a question, Zal draws a quiet breath through their beak and pauses just long enough to make the other person wonder whether they have been judged. They keep their chin slightly raised and tap one claw against their signet ring when someone wastes time.
Personality
Courteous, controlled, and attentive to rank, Zal gives praise sparingly and remembers every public slight. They prefer a calm negotiation to a fight, but make their politeness feel like a contract being drafted.
Ideals
Order. Every promise creates an obligation, and every obligation should have a price. A stable hierarchy is better than chaos, even when Zal must sit at its top.
Bonds
Zal is determined to restore their family's standing, not from affection for its faded reputation, but because they believe the household's old authority belongs in their hands. They keep a folded pedigree scroll close and will not allow it to be mocked or destroyed.
Flaws
Zal mistakes obedience for respect and will punish a slight more readily than they will admit to being hurt. Their confidence in careful plans makes them slow to recognize when a situation has changed.
Quirks
Background
Zal was born to a once-influential aarakocra household whose wealth came from controlling the safe passage of messengers over the flooded terraces of Thatha's Teeth. The place kept its name as a warning after a landslide buried the old road, and Zal grew up hearing that a warning ignored is a debt collected. Their mother, Neshwe, taught them courtly speech and the arithmetic of obligation. Zal learned early that a title could open a door, but a measured threat could keep it open.
