Appearance

Spectre stands six feet two inches tall, with a lean, athletic build shaped by constant movement and combat. His devilishly handsome face bears a day's worth of dark stubble, framed by neatly trimmed short brown hair and sharp, perceptive eyes. He wears obsidian black sleeveless studded leather armor beneath a heavy hooded black wool cloak trimmed with black and brown fur. Black boots, a silver throat clasp, and an unsettling stillness complete his silhouette. Though he presents himself as a monk, his attire resembles the equipment of a covert operative, and faint distortions sometimes ripple around him when he moves.

Mannerisms

Spectre maintains impeccable posture even when exhausted. He adjusts his silver throat clasp before making a difficult decision, pauses half a second before answering personal questions, and addresses dangerous enemies with the same courteous tone he uses for honored guests. When concentrating, he lightly taps two fingers against his wrist as if counting down to an unseen event.

Personality

Spectre is effortlessly charming, emotionally reserved, and quietly observant. He makes people feel fascinating and valued, often remembering small details they assumed he had missed. His polished diction carries a faint British aristocratic quality, while his detachment hints at secrets beyond ordinary mortal experience. Confidence borders on arrogance, but his discipline keeps it controlled. He is courteous even in combat, and the more dangerous a situation becomes, the softer his voice tends to get.

Ideals

Order. Freedom without discipline becomes cruelty, while power without structure becomes tyranny. Every force in the multiverse must have a place and a limit, even death.

Bonds

He protects abandoned children and displaced outcasts, because no one else protected him. He is also bound to the mysterious shrine that first taught him to defy death, and he will cross realms to discover who built it and why it chose him.

Flaws

Spectre is incapable of accepting that some mysteries should remain unsolved. His charm often masks an arrogant certainty that he alone can control the situation. He also treats death as a problem to be overcome rather than a boundary to be respected, and each resurrection makes him less certain that the person returning is truly him.

Quirks

He gives enemies a sincere compliment immediately before defeating them.
He never sits with his back to a door, even in supposedly safe locations.
He keeps a private tally of every death and resurrection, though the numbers never seem consistent.
Reflections around him occasionally move a fraction of a second late.
He collects broken keys from places where he has escaped captivity.

Background

Spectre remembers the city before he remembers his name. He grew up beneath bridges, in abandoned crypts, and behind the kitchens of wealthy houses, surviving through quick hands, quicker judgment, and an instinct for knowing when violence was about to begin. As an urchin, he learned that every city had two maps. One was drawn in streets and landmarks, the other in glances, footsteps, hidden doors, and the invisible boundaries enforced by fear. He mastered both before he reached adulthood. His life changed when a dying stranger found him in a sealed subterranean shrine. The stranger belonged to a monastic order that studied the space between moments, teaching that disciplined movement could become a form of power. Spectre learned to turn motion into force, force into absence, and absence into echoes that moved like fragments of himself. During an initiation ritual, he died. He awoke days later in a different city, with no wound, no explanation, and a black mark over his heart. Since then, he has claimed that death is merely an interruption. His knowledge of other planes, impossible artifacts, and spectral doubles suggests that something followed him back from the places beyond mortal reality. Now Spectre walks the world as a precise instrument of balance. He is charming when charm is useful, detached when emotion would interfere, and ruthlessly calm when circumstances demand action. He speaks with polished, faintly aristocratic diction, as though he learned manners from a royal court and murder from the gutter. He seeks the truth behind his repeated resurrections, while quietly fearing that each return leaves less of the original man behind.
