Solemn, observant, and unfailingly formal, Orun speaks as though every conversation is a lesson that may be remembered for centuries. He is genuinely compassionate toward suffering, but his compassion becomes strained when suffering is accompanied by shouting, unnecessary questions, or poorly organized marching order. He prefers difficult truths to comforting explanations and considers a well-timed silence a complete answer.

Orun Ezkibel was born in a farming village pressed between steep hills, where the wind arrived early and left late. As a young man, he became fascinated by the pauses between ordinary sounds, the silence after a bell stopped ringing, the breath held before a word, the stillness before rain. He left home to study at the Reed-Cleft Retreat, a remote monastery built around a spring said to reflect not faces, but intentions. There, he learned to fight without armor, to read the balance of a body, and to endure discomfort without mistaking endurance for wisdom. During twelve years of solitude, Orun uncovered a troubling insight. Enlightenment was not a distant state above the world, but a discipline of meeting every interruption without surrendering to anger. Unfortunately, the monastery had no practical lessons involving nineteen loud, opinionated adventurers arguing over camp arrangements, rations, treasure division, and whose turn it was to keep watch. Orun now travels with this sprawling company because each companion presents a living test of his discovery. He sincerely believes they may help him reach enlightenment. He also keeps a private tally of how many times each of them has interrupted his morning meditation.
