His black hair is kept in thick braids bound with bits of polished bone and blue cord. He wears a patched wool coat over practical sailor's clothes, with every repair made in neat, visible stitching. His most carefully maintained possession is a faded red sash from his first ship, wrapped twice around one wrist. His hands are enormous and callused, and he carries himself with the steady balance of someone who expects the ground to move beneath him.

Veganoth is deliberate, observant, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people and small animals. He speaks plainly, dislikes wasteful boasting, and treats practical competence as a form of courtesy. He is fascinated by maps, knots, weather signs, and unfamiliar foods, though he pretends to judge every new dish before secretly enjoying it.

Veganoth Stoneguard Ganu-Mekali was born among a highland goliath clan that measured worth through endurance, skill, and the ability to protect those who depended on you. He was strong even by goliath standards, but he was never the clan's finest hunter or climber. Instead, he became fascinated by the distant sea, a place his people described as a flat, restless horizon where even mountains could disappear. When a merchant crew came inland seeking laborers, Veganoth joined them, partly to prove that strength had uses beyond the mountains and partly because he wanted to see what waited beyond the edge of every map.
