Appearance
Kettik is a lean kenku with charcoal-black feathers, a narrow hooked beak, and bright copper eyes that catch every glint of lamplight. Small brass rings pierce the edges of his left wing, each one engraved with a fragment of a prayer. He wears scuffed leather armor beneath a tool-laden gray robe, with pockets full of wire, lenses, bits of spring steel, and tiny devotional charms. A patched satchel hangs at his side, its flap painted with the faded sunburst of the shrine where he was raised.
Mannerisms
Kettik tilts his head sharply when listening, then repeats the last few words in the speaker's exact voice before answering. When concentrating, he taps a steady rhythm against his beak with a tool or claw. He bows to functioning machines, locks, and bells as though they were minor saints.
Personality
Kettik is inquisitive, practical, and warmly irreverent. He approaches sacred mysteries and broken hinges with the same focused attention. He prefers demonstrating affection through repairs, useful gifts, and quietly solved problems rather than emotional declarations. Though his voice is borrowed from others, his pauses, gestures, and choices reveal a distinctly independent mind.
Ideals
Ingenuity. A useful creation is a prayer made with the hands. If something is broken, abandoning it without trying to mend it is a moral failure.
Bonds
The hilltop shrine that raised Kettik is his true home. He will risk almost anything to protect its people, recover its lost archives, or restore the great bronze bell.
Flaws
Kettik cannot resist taking apart unfamiliar devices, even when doing so is dangerous, disrespectful, or urgently inconvenient. He also mistakes memorized words for understanding and can become fiercely argumentative when someone says a phrase differently from the version he learned.
Quirks
Background
Kettik was raised in a hilltop shrine where pilgrims came to pray beside an old bronze bell. The priests valued his perfect memory for voices, hymns, and spoken lessons, but they never quite knew what to do with his restless hands. He began repairing the shrine's cracked lanterns, adjusting the bell's striking arm, and building little mechanical birds that could repeat fragments of scripture. His inventions were not always elegant, but they kept the shrine lit through winter and gave lonely travelers something to smile at. When a fire damaged the shrine archives, Kettik salvaged what he could, including a half-burned prayer book and a broken astrolabe belonging to a vanished acolyte. He left the shrine to restore sacred objects, recover lost teachings, and learn whether the astrolabe points toward a real place or merely records the path of someone who never returned. He still serves his faith, but he does so in his own crooked fashion, treating every repaired tool as a small act of devotion and every tyrant's lock as a challenge best answered with a carefully chosen spark.
