Appearance
Bubbann is a compact, broad-shouldered hill dwarf with a carefully braided russet beard and bright, observant eyes. He wears saffron and charcoal training wraps beneath a traveler's vest, with a battered little hand drum hanging from his belt. The drum's leather rim is polished smooth where his thumb constantly rubs it. His square jaw and slightly oversized front teeth show whenever he eats, grins, or laughs, giving his stern expressions an unexpectedly cheerful edge. He carries himself with dancer's balance and the deliberate stillness of a practiced martial artist.
Mannerisms
Bubbann taps quiet rhythms against his thumb whenever he is thinking. Before speaking to an angry person, he takes one slow breath and subtly squares his feet. He laughs from deep in his chest, then immediately tries to disguise it as a cough.
Personality
Bubbann is patient, warm, and intensely attentive. He treats every conversation as a duet, listening for the rhythm beneath a person's words. In public he is an exuberant performer, quick with a grin and a flourish, but in private he is contemplative and exacting. He believes humor can lower defenses, music can unite strangers, and a calm voice can stop violence before it begins.
Ideals
Discipline. Self-control is not obedience to authority. It is the strength to choose the right action when anger, fear, or pride demands an easier one.
Bonds
He carries the hand drum given to him by his first teacher, and will risk almost anything to protect the monastery that trained him and the common people who depend on it.
Flaws
Bubbann cannot resist turning a tense confrontation into a performance, even when silence and retreat would be wiser. He is also stubborn about accepting help, fearing that dependence will make him less disciplined.
Quirks
Background
Bubbann was born in a hill-dwarf settlement where every important occasion had a rhythm: the measured hammering of a forge, the stamping of dancers at a wedding, and the low drumbeat used to settle disputes before tempers became violence. His family expected him to become a brewer, but Bubbann discovered that he could make people listen by combining disciplined footwork with impossible drum patterns. A traveling monastic troupe saw him perform during a harvest celebration and offered him instruction in their philosophy of movement, breath, and restraint. He became both performer and student, traveling from village squares to wealthy courts, using acrobatics, music, and controlled demonstrations of martial skill to earn meals and spread his teachers' lessons. Bubbann left the monastery after a corrupt magistrate tried to use the troupe's reputation to intimidate local people. Rather than respond with vengeance, he exposed the magistrate through a public performance that turned the crowd against him. Now Bubbann wanders in search of people who are being silenced by fear, believing that a steady rhythm can gather courage, and that courage can become action.
