Appearance
Nura Kett is a sturdy hill dwarf woman with a broad, expressive face, a round nose, very thick lips, and warm brown eyes that seem to measure every room she enters. Her long black hair is parted into two enormous braids, each braid half black and half white. She changes her clothing constantly, shifting between servant's garb, merchant's finery, pilgrim's robes, guard uniforms, and theatrical costumes. Her makeup kit is carefully arranged by color and use, and she carries hidden pockets in nearly every outfit.
Mannerisms
Nura tests every disguise by turning her head three different ways, checking how the hair, makeup, and collar move together. When thinking, she taps a fingertip against her lower lip and silently mouths possible replies in other people's voices.
Personality
Nura is observant, playful, and intensely practical. She treats clothing as a language and accents as tools, but beneath her humor is a serious dislike of bullies, exploitative officials, and anyone who uses respectability as an excuse for cruelty. She is generous with frightened people and suspicious of anyone who claims they have nothing to hide.
Ideals
Freedom. No law deserves obedience merely because it is written down. People should be judged by the harm they cause, not by the rules they break.
Bonds
She owes her freedom and her first proper disguise kit to an aging theater caravan that was ruined by a corrupt magistrate. Nura is determined to expose that magistrate's network and repay the performers who protected her, even if doing so means stealing from powerful people.
Flaws
Nura cannot resist improving another person's appearance, costume, or accent, even when doing so is dangerous. She also lies about small things when the truth would be easier, because she enjoys proving that she can make anyone believe her.
Quirks
Background
Nura Kett grew up in a crowded hill dwarf settlement where everyone knew the sound of everyone else's footsteps. She had no gift for quiet movement, with her slow, deliberate stride and heavy dwarf's build, so she learned to make people look in the wrong direction instead. An aunt who performed in traveling dramas taught Nura the arts of cosmetics, posture, voice, and imitation. Nura discovered that a little charcoal around the eyes, a false scar, and the right stoop could turn her into almost anyone. The costumes began as play, then became a way to carry messages, slip past watchmen, and enter places where an ordinary dwarf girl would never be welcomed.
