Appearance
Belle is a striking tiefling woman with warm umber skin, swept-back black hair threaded with copper beads, curved dark-red horns, and bright amber eyes. She dresses like a prosperous saloon keeper in a fitted burgundy waistcoat, cream blouse, black trousers, and polished boots, with a rose-shaped silver brooch at her throat. Her lute is decorated with thornlike carvings and hidden compartments. Her voice is low, musical, and effortlessly inviting, but when she is frightened it becomes breathy and overly precise. She habitually checks the rose brooch with two fingers whenever she is thinking or lying.
Mannerisms
Belle leans slightly forward when listening, as if every conversation is a private confidence. She keeps one hand near her rose brooch, taps rhythms against tabletops when planning, and gives compliments with such perfect timing that people often realize only later that they have agreed to help her.
Personality
Quick-witted, warm, and theatrically confident, Belle treats every conversation like a song whose rhythm she already knows. She is generous with food, shelter, and second chances, but enjoys turning an arrogant person's own words against them. Beneath her charm is a tireless vigilance, always watching exits, uniforms, and who is counting the coins.
Ideals
Freedom. No crown, law, or inherited title gives anyone the right to decide who deserves food, safety, or dignity.
Bonds
The Rose and Thorn Saloon is both Belle's home and a sanctuary for travelers, debtors, and people with nowhere else to go. She will protect its staff and regulars at any cost. She also keeps the original ledger that exposed the magistrate's corruption, believing it may one day bring down the wider network of nobles who profit from hunger.
Flaws
Belle cannot resist humiliating people who abuse power, even when a quiet solution would be safer. She lies smoothly about her identity, but becomes defensive and reckless when anyone questions whether her good deeds are truly selfless.
Quirks
Background
Belle was raised in a riverside village where her infernal heritage made her an easy target for suspicion, but her mother taught her that a good reputation is built one generous act at a time. Belle learned music from traveling performers, bookkeeping from a shopkeeper, and the art of reading a room from everyone who underestimated her. When a corrupt magistrate seized a season's grain and jailed the farmers who protested, Belle organized a midnight raid, stole the grain back, and scattered the magistrate's ledgers across the town square. The people called her a hero. The magistrate called her an outlaw, and posted a reward under the name Rose Thorn.
