Appearance
Albert is a broad, heavyset male tortle with a moss-green shell streaked with pale mineral lines and a warm ochre hide. His shell is unusually well maintained, with small bundles of dried herbs and colored cords tied near the rim. He carries himself like a walking piece of furniture, often blocking doorways or standing much closer to people than necessary without realizing it. A pair of round spectacles rests low on his beak, and he repeatedly nudges them back into place while thinking. His expression is usually thoughtful, mildly distracted, and one observation away from becoming an unsolicited lecture.
Mannerisms
Albert frequently nudges his spectacles up his beak, taps his shell twice before making a decision, and leans forward until his entire shell seems to loom over the person he is speaking with. When excited, he begins tracing diagrams in the air with one claw.
Personality
Albert is intensely curious, academically confident, and easily distracted by unusual natural phenomena. He speaks to strangers as if they are already colleagues in an ongoing investigation. Despite his bluntness, he is not cruel. He genuinely wants people and ecosystems to flourish, though he often believes that a well-reasoned explanation is more comforting than it actually is.
Ideals
Knowledge should be tested, not worshiped. A fact that cannot survive observation, questioning, and revision is only a superstition wearing scholarly clothes.
Bonds
Albert carries a water-stained notebook containing the unfinished research of his first druidic mentor. He intends to complete it, even if doing so requires visiting every dangerous swamp, ruin, and cursed woodland mentioned in its pages.
Flaws
Albert cannot resist correcting inaccurate statements, even when the correction is irrelevant, dangerous, or socially disastrous. He also has a tendency to treat living creatures as fascinating research subjects before remembering that they may object.
Quirks
Background
Albert was raised in a quiet tortle settlement built beside a reed-choked lake, where elders measured time by migrations, floods, and the slow replacement of shell paint. His curiosity made him a poor fit for a life of patient routine. He wanted to know why certain flowers bloomed after lightning storms, why birds abandoned one nesting ground for another, and whether the old stories about spirits in the marsh were metaphor or eyewitness testimony. An itinerant druid recognized that his questions were not a nuisance but the beginning of a discipline, and taught Albert the Druidic language, the names of medicinal plants, and the responsibility that comes with interfering in nature's patterns. Albert eventually traveled to a remote archive maintained by hermits, hedge-wizards, and natural philosophers. There he became a tireless assistant, copying field notes, comparing contradictory bestiaries, and cataloging specimens that occasionally escaped into the shelves. His work earned him the title of sage, though not always the respect of the other sages. Albert has now left the archive to test written knowledge against the living world. He is eager to investigate strange ecosystems, forgotten ruins, and supernatural disturbances, but he is just as likely to abandon a sensible plan because he has discovered an interesting mushroom.
