Appearance
Gorstine is a powerfully built male tabaxi with tawny fur marked by dark vertical stripes along his shoulders and forearms. He stands with the rigid posture of a drilled soldier, his amber gaze constantly tracking exits, hands, and weapons whenever he enters a room. His ranger's clothing is practical and slightly too formal, with a weathered green cloak carefully folded over one shoulder and a polished brass military rank insignia sewn inside the collar, visible only when he chooses to reveal it. His claws are kept meticulously clean, while his boots and scabbard show repeated field repairs.
Mannerisms
Gorstine pauses at every doorway to inspect the room before entering. He addresses strangers by rank or function rather than by name, and when issuing instructions he briefly taps two claws against his brass insignia. He keeps his voice quiet in dangerous situations, forcing others to lean closer.
Personality
Gorstine is controlled, observant, and relentlessly practical. He speaks with clipped military precision, dislikes improvisation unless he is the one improvising, and treats every conversation as an assessment of loyalty and usefulness. Beneath his discipline is a tabaxi's restless curiosity, expressed through a fascination with maps, unusual weapons, battlefield superstitions, and the habits of people under pressure.
Ideals
Order. Freedom without discipline is merely the right to endanger everyone else. A strong authority must be obeyed before it can be judged.
Bonds
The soldiers of his abandoned patrol are the only people Gorstine believes he truly failed. He carries their unit insignia and intends to find the officer who sacrificed them, whether justice requires a trial or an execution.
Flaws
Gorstine mistakes obedience for virtue and assumes that anyone who questions his orders is either weak or treacherous. He is willing to sacrifice innocents if he believes the example will preserve order, and he rarely admits uncertainty even when the evidence is against him.
Quirks
Background
Gorstine was raised among a tabaxi warband that served as scouts, outriders, and battlefield messengers for a disciplined city-state army. His natural curiosity made him an exceptional tracker, but his fascination with chains of command gradually hardened into something colder. He learned that a well-placed report could ruin a rival, that a delayed warning could decide a battle, and that obedience was most valuable when it was demanded from others. By the time he earned the rank of claw-captain, he was respected for his competence and quietly dreaded for his willingness to enforce orders without mercy. His career ended when a superior officer ordered him to abandon a patrol that had discovered evidence of corruption among the army's commanders. Gorstine obeyed, then returned alone days later to recover the patrol's insignia and personal effects. He has since left the army, officially disgraced but still convinced that the institution failed because it lacked a sufficiently ruthless hand. Now he works as a ranger, hunting fugitives, monsters, and anyone who threatens the stability he believes civilization requires. He does not seek redemption. He seeks a command worthy of his talents, and a realm sufficiently frightened to appreciate it.
