Appearance
Aleron is a tall, broad-shouldered human who habitually occupies more room than a conversation seems to require, and rarely notices when others edge aside. His dark hair is combed straight back with almost fussy care, and his beard is trimmed to a precise, narrow line. Ink stains persist along the side of his writing hand. He dresses in a well-mended scholar’s coat with deep pockets, carrying his spellbook in a leather case secured against his ribs.
Mannerisms
He squares papers with the edge of a table before reading them, and pauses to repeat a question in a shorter form before answering. When thinking, he presses his thumb against the spine of his spellbook as though checking that it is still there.
Personality
Measured and conscientious, Aleron listens closely and speaks in clean, carefully qualified sentences. He is courteous without being warm, and quietly generous with anyone who takes their work seriously. He has little patience for confident claims that have not been checked.
Ideals
Order. Knowledge becomes useful only when it is recorded, checked, and put to work. A correct method matters more than a comfortable answer.
Bonds
He sends part of his earnings to the people who keep Ford’s ferry yard running, and he has promised to recover a set of river-route measurements that vanished from its notice room. He keeps the first page of his teacher’s battered lecture notes inside his spellbook.
Flaws
He treats uncertainty as a problem to be solved rather than a condition to be endured. When someone rejects his advice, he tends to collect evidence against their judgment instead of asking what they fear or value.
Quirks
Background
Aleron Voss was born in a crowded riverside house where every room had a purpose and every purpose had a schedule. His family expected him to keep accounts for the ferry yard, but he became absorbed by the old route notices and star tables stored above the work floor. The habit that began as curiosity turned into a life of study: he learned to read several hands, compare conflicting accounts, and wait out people who mistook patience for ignorance. The family’s blunt little settlement, called Ford, was where he first saw how a small error in a copied measurement could cost a crew a season’s wages. He left to study at a school known locally as Long Room, a shortened name whose original meaning nobody remembers. There he became a meticulous researcher and, later, an evoker, convinced that dangerous magic should be understood well enough to use without guesswork. His spells are exact, economical, and rarely showy unless a display will prevent a worse mistake. He now travels to recover missing records and test old claims, carrying a carefully indexed spellbook and an uncomfortable conviction that good knowledge belongs in responsible hands, even when its owners disagree.
