Appearance
Professor Magnus Mosrug is a broad-shelled tortle with moss-green scales, amber eyes, and a weathered shell covered in faded chalk diagrams, star charts, and tiny brass plaques bearing academic notes. He wears layered scholar's robes tailored around his shell, spectacles secured by a leather cord, and a small satchel filled with parchment, ink, and carefully labeled spell components. His staff is polished driftwood capped with a crystal lens.
Mannerisms
Magnus pauses before answering even simple questions, as though consulting an invisible index. He taps his staff three times when forming a theory, adjusts his spectacles with one claw, and frequently turns his head sideways while listening, giving the impression that he is examining a problem from another angle.
Personality
Magnus is patient, scholarly, and unfailingly polite, even when correcting someone who is dangerously wrong. He enjoys teaching, collects unusual facts, and has a calming habit of explaining frightening events in clear academic language. Beneath his measured manner is a fierce protective instinct toward the vulnerable and a persistent excitement whenever he encounters an unsolved mystery.
Ideals
Knowledge should serve compassion. Every secret has the potential to heal or harm, and those who uncover hidden truths are responsible for how they use them.
Bonds
The final letter from his missing colleague is his most treasured possession. Magnus is determined to uncover the truth behind the disappearance and protect the colleague's research from those who would weaponize it.
Flaws
Magnus is so confident in the value of knowledge that he sometimes treats immediate danger as an inconvenient interruption to a lecture. He also has difficulty abandoning a mystery, even when pursuing it places his companions at risk.
Quirks
Background
Magnus Mosrug was born in a quiet tortle settlement on the edge of a broad river delta, where most of his kin measured life by tides, migrations, and the slow turning of seasons. Magnus measured it in questions. He collected broken tablets from the mud, interviewed passing merchants about distant kingdoms, and painted constellations across his shell so he could study the heavens while carrying his notes with him. His patient curiosity eventually attracted the attention of a traveling arcanist, who recognized that Magnus possessed an unusual talent for seeing patterns before they became obvious. He spent decades as an assistant in a remote academy, where he became known as Professor Mosrug after solving a series of historical mysteries involving contradictory royal records and a vanished school of diviners. His research into prophetic magic revealed references to an ancient catastrophe that may still be approaching. When a colleague disappeared after sending Magnus a warning hidden inside a mundane scholarly letter, he left the academy to investigate personally. Magnus now travels as an adventuring scholar, seeking lost knowledge, protecting people endangered by dangerous secrets, and proving that wisdom is measured not by how much one knows, but by what one chooses to do with it.
