Appearance
Gorovai is a broad-shouldered half-orc with olive-gray skin, strong tusks, and thick black hair usually tied at the nape with a faded red cord. He stands with most of his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, as though every quiet moment might become a sudden charge. His clothing and armor are meticulously maintained, with polished buckles, carefully oiled leather, and a cloak repaired in several contrasting stitches. His expression is watchful rather than grim, and his eyes often carry the amused patience of someone waiting for a fool to reveal himself.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Gorovai rocks subtly from heel to toe and keeps one hand near the center of his shield rather than his weapon. He checks buckles and straps whenever conversation becomes tense. He speaks softly to make people lean closer, then becomes unexpectedly loud when giving an order in danger.
Personality
Gorovai is patient with frightened people, suspicious of polished officials, and unexpectedly gentle with animals and children. He prefers practical kindness to grand speeches, and he often uses dry humor to defuse tension. He enjoys repairing useful objects, considers a clean camp a sign of civilization, and believes that confidence is best demonstrated by making room for someone else to speak.
Ideals
Freedom. No uniform, oath, or law excuses cruelty. A person is responsible for what they choose to protect, not merely for the orders they obey.
Bonds
He carries the old company insignia of the soldiers who followed him back into the marsh, and he will risk almost anything to keep their memory from being turned into a lie.
Flaws
He treats authority as guilty until proven useful, and once he decides someone is abusing power, he becomes reckless about humiliating or defying them. He also has a habit of accepting responsibility for failures that were never his fault, then refusing help because he believes endurance is the same thing as virtue.
Quirks
Background
Gorovai was born in a border settlement where half-orc families were valued whenever the watch needed someone strong enough to hold a gate, but distrusted whenever the town wanted someone to blame. His mother taught him the practical arts of mending harness, sharpening tools, and feeding a household through a hard winter. His father, a caravan guard from the eastern highlands, taught him that a weapon was not a symbol of power but a promise that someone weaker would get to walk away alive. Gorovai took that promise seriously and enlisted young, partly to earn a place no one could dispute and partly to learn how armies turned frightened people into disciplined ones. He served as a line soldier and scout, becoming known for breaking formations at exactly the moment an enemy believed them secure. During a disastrous retreat, his commander ordered the unit to abandon a group of villagers trapped behind a collapsed bridge. Gorovai disobeyed, led a dozen soldiers back through the marsh, and got the villagers out, though the company lost its banner and several officers. The survivors remembered him as a hero. The officers remembered him as insubordinate. Rather than accept a quiet execution disguised as a dishonorable discharge, Gorovai left under cover of night, carrying only his military insignia, his battered shield, and the conviction that laws are useful tools but poor substitutes for conscience. Now he takes work where it comes, especially when it involves protecting people whom respectable authorities have decided are expendable.
