Appearance
Tavren Kulkka is a nineteen-year-old human man with a broad, sturdy build and an imposing height. He weighs approximately 255 pounds, with powerful shoulders and the grounded posture of someone accustomed to carrying heavy books, equipment, and responsibility. His pale skin has an unusual, almost moonlit quality, especially when arcane energy gathers around him. Dark brown hair, touched by a natural reddish tint, falls in a slightly messy but carefully maintained frame around his face. His golden-hazel eyes glow faintly when he studies magic or senses danger. He wears a dark enchanted robe made from layered fabrics, reinforced with leather at the shoulders and forearms. Subtle blue and teal symbols are stitched along the hems. A spellbook hangs from his belt beside scroll tubes, charms, and a polished crystal focus mounted in an ancient brass frame. His expression is calm, intelligent, and quietly confident.
Mannerisms
Tavren pauses before answering difficult questions, as though arranging words on an invisible page. When concentrating, he taps the bottom of his staff three times against the ground. He rarely raises his voice, which makes his sudden bursts of sharp command especially startling.
Personality
Tavren is calm, observant, and intellectually hungry. He prefers precise questions to confident guesses and listens closely for contradictions in what people say. Despite his intimidating size, he is unexpectedly gentle with frightened animals, inexperienced apprentices, and anyone who admits they do not understand something. He enjoys dangerous fieldwork more than he admits, especially when it proves that an elegant theory can survive contact with reality.
Ideals
Knowledge should be used as a shield. The purpose of understanding dangerous power is to prevent it from destroying people who cannot defend themselves.
Bonds
I carry my vanished mentor's damaged research and will find out whether she is dead, trapped, or hiding from something worse.
Flaws
Tavren treats every mystery as a personal challenge, even when leaving it unsolved would be wiser. He also has an unhealthy confidence in his ability to control dangerous magic once he has understood its theory.
Quirks
Background
Tavren Kulkka grew up in a cold river town where his family repaired wagons, mill machinery, and farm tools. He was large even as a child, but his real strength was his refusal to accept that anything was impossible to understand. When a traveling archivist noticed Tavren copying complex diagrams from memory, she arranged for him to work as an assistant in a distant college of magic. There, he learned the patient disciplines of reading, experimentation, and surviving the consequences of being clever too quickly. His apprenticeship ended when his mentor vanished while investigating a sealed ruin beneath an abandoned observatory. Tavren discovered that the ruin contained references to a lost defensive tradition, magic designed not to dominate the battlefield but to keep knowledge and people alive within it. He took his mentor's damaged notes, inherited a strange crystal focus, and left the college to search for the truth. Tavren is now an adventurer because dangerous places contain the answers that libraries only describe. He studies forbidden knowledge, but he refuses to let curiosity become an excuse for cruelty. His broad frame and measured manner often cause enemies to underestimate how quickly he can turn a battlefield against them.
