Bonus action

  • RageLevel 1

Aldunai can enter a rage as a bonus action. He can rage 5 times per long rest. While raging, he gains advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, a +3 damage bonus with Strength-based melee weapon attacks, and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. He cannot cast or concentrate on spells while raging.

  • Unarmored DefenseLevel 1

Aldunai has advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks and can use a bonus action to make a melee weapon attack with the opposite end of a weapon bearing the heavy property, provided it is a two-handed weapon. He does not add his ability modifier to the bonus attack's damage unless that modifier is negative.

  • Feral InstinctLevel 7

Aldunai can choose to enter a rage as a bonus action even if he is surprised. He has advantage on initiative rolls. If he is surprised at the start of combat and is not incapacitated, he can act normally on his first turn if he enters his rage before doing anything else.

  • Totemic Attunement, BearLevel 14

Aldunai can make a third weapon attack when he takes the Attack action while raging. The attack must use a bonus action and cannot be made on the same turn as a bonus-action attack from Frenzy.

  • Persistent RageLevel 15

Aldunai can maintain a rage even if he has not attacked a hostile creature or taken damage since his previous turn, but only if he uses a bonus action to do so. His rage ends early only if he falls unconscious or chooses to end it.

Reaction

  • Stone's EnduranceGoliathAs a reaction, reduce damage from an attack by 1d12 + Constitution modifier. Usable once per short or long rest.

Always on

  • Bear's Endurance

    When While raging

While raging, Aldunai has resistance to all damage except psychic damage.

  • Twin Hew

When When taking the Attack action

Aldunai makes two greataxe attacks, using Reckless Attack when he needs certainty rather than safety.

  • Totemic Overrun

When While raging, after taking the Attack action

Aldunai makes a third greataxe attack against a creature within reach while raging.

  • Reckless Attack

When On his first attack of the turn

Aldunai chooses to attack recklessly, gaining advantage on Strength-based melee weapon attack rolls this turn, while granting attackers advantage against him until his next turn.

  • Refuse the Grave

When When reduced to 0 hit points while raging

Aldunai can remain standing at 1 hit point after failing a deathly blow while raging, subject to an escalating Constitution saving throw.

  • Totem Spirit, BearLevel 3

Aldunai chooses the Bear totem spirit. While raging, he has resistance to all damage except psychic damage.

  • Danger SenseLevel 2

Aldunai can reroll a failed Dexterity saving throw against an effect he can see, such as a trap or spell. He must use the new roll and cannot use this feature again until he finishes a short or long rest.

  • Mindless RageLevel 6

Aldunai gains proficiency in Strength saving throws and has advantage on saving throws against being frightened while raging.

  • Extra AttackLevel 5

Aldunai can attack twice instead of once whenever he takes the Attack action on his turn.

  • Fast MovementLevel 5

Aldunai's speed increases by 10 feet while he is not wearing heavy armor.

  • Aspect of the Beast, BearLevel 6

Aldunai chooses the Bear aspect. He gains the carrying capacity of a creature one size larger, including his maximum carrying capacity and the weight he can push, drag, or lift.

  • Brutal CriticalLevel 9

Aldunai scores a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 when making a melee weapon attack.

  • Mindless RageLevel 6

Aldunai has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened while raging. If he is frightened or charmed when he enters a rage, the effect is suspended for the duration of the rage.

  • Relentless RageLevel 11

When Aldunai drops to 0 hit points while raging and does not die outright, he can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw to drop to 1 hit point instead. Each use after the first increases the DC by 5, and the DC resets after a short or long rest.

  • Indomitable MightLevel 18

Aldunai can use his Strength score in place of any Strength check if the total is lower than his Strength score.

Appearance

A towering male goliath with slate-gray skin, broad shoulders, and pale blue eyes. His black hair is kept in a long, carefully braided queue threaded with small bronze rings, while his beard is trimmed with deliberate precision. He wears unmarked hide armor beneath a weathered red wool mantle, favoring practical layers suited to high mountain travel. His voice is deep and resonant, usually measured and almost courtly, but when angered his breathing becomes slow, loud, and deliberate, as though he is forcing each breath through clenched teeth.

Mannerisms

He pauses before answering difficult questions and draws one slow breath through his nose. When speaking in public, he unconsciously squares his shoulders as if addressing a council. He rarely raises his voice, which makes the rare occasions when he does so feel like a physical impact.

Personality

Aldunai is formal, observant, and surprisingly patient in private. He listens to servants, soldiers, and farmers with the same grave attention he gives ambassadors, because he believes the truth is usually spoken by people who have nothing to gain from being polite. He enjoys fine food, carefully made clothing, and well-maintained weapons, but regards luxury as a tool of authority rather than a personal indulgence.

Ideals

Sovereignty. A ruler who cannot protect the least village has no right to command the greatest fortress. Freedom is worth any burden, including burdens imposed by an imperfect ruler.

Bonds

The mountain villages under his rule are his responsibility, even when their people curse him for the taxes, conscripts, and harsh decisions needed to keep the state independent. He carries a chipped stone seal from the first ruler of the vassal state and intends to return it to a free throne, or bury it beneath the ruins of the empire that claims him.

Flaws

He mistakes compromise for weakness when watched by his own people, and he would rather risk a disastrous stand than let a rival believe he has been cowed. He is also capable of treating loyal companions like subjects, issuing orders first and asking permission never.

Quirks

He names every campaign map after the first person who lied to him on that route.
He keeps his greataxe polished enough to reflect candlelight before negotiations.
He silently counts the doors and windows whenever he enters a room.
He can identify several mountain herbs by scent alone and becomes offended when others call them weeds.

Background

Aldunai was born among a highland goliath clan that served as the military spine of a small human vassal state. When the old ruler died without an heir, the state fractured between ambitious nobles, foreign creditors, and frightened villages. Aldunai's clan held the mountain passes, and its elders chose him as their war-chief because he could command both the patience of a negotiator and the violence required to make negotiations matter. He was eventually named ruler of the vassal state, though his crown was little more than a hammered iron circlet and a promise that the neighboring empire would not march through his valleys without paying a price.
