Appearance
A broad-shouldered human veteran with weathered skin, a squared jaw, and close-cropped dark hair threaded with early gray. He wears polished chain mail with a dented shield painted over once and repainted twice, and keeps a soldier's discipline in every movement. A faded unit insignia hangs at his throat, and his hands bear the small scars of drill, blade work, and old battlefield burns.
Mannerisms
He stands at attention when listening, even in taverns, and unconsciously checks exits, sightlines, and cover before sitting. When thinking, he polishes the edge of his shield strap with his thumb.
Personality
Calm, deliberate, and hard to rattle, Tomas speaks like every word has to earn its place. He is courteous to civilians, strict with himself, and quietly protective of the weak. Under pressure he becomes almost serene, as if battle is merely another drill.
Ideals
Duty. A soldier's first oath is to protect the people who cannot protect themselves, and to keep violence from spilling beyond necessity.
Bonds
He still keeps the battered insignia of his old company, and he will not abandon a comrade, even a former rival, if there is any honest chance to pull them home alive.
Flaws
He obeys too quickly when an order sounds official, then resents himself for it afterward. He struggles to admit fear, and when he believes a plan is sloppy, he can become blunt enough to wound allies with his criticism.

Background
Tomas Vale was born to a line of ordinary folk who valued sturdy roofs, full granaries, and keeping promises once they were made. As a human, he had the restlessness common to his kind, and he answered the banner before he ever learned how to shave properly. He was not the strongest recruit, nor the fastest, but he was the one who remembered orders, studied the manuals, and learned to read the shapes of a battlefield the way others read a page. Years of marching, drilling, and shield work made him into a dependable front-line fighter, the kind commanders trusted when a breach had to be held or a route had to be cleared. Yet one campaign ended badly, with a superior's pride costing too many lives. Tomas survived by obeying one order too many, and he has carried the weight of that obedience ever since. Now he travels under his own name, still upright, still dutiful, but determined to decide for himself when discipline serves justice and when it merely feeds folly.
