Appearance

A slender half-elf with warm brown skin, softly pointed ears, and thick dark hair worn in a loose braid threaded with faded ribbons from failed bardic auditions. Their eyes are deep hazel, but when their new patron's influence stirs, tiny rings of pale blue light ripple across the irises. They dress like a traveling performer who has had to become practical, wearing a weathered leather coat over a once-gaudy plum shirt, soft boots, and a collection of mismatched charms. They occupy surprisingly little physical space, often folding inward as if apologizing for being present, but their voice begins with a careful pause and a quiet intake of breath before emerging warm, rounded, and impossible to ignore.

Mannerisms

Before speaking, Sovel takes a small breath through the nose and waits half a second too long, as if listening for an answer from somewhere behind the listener. They tap two fingers against their wrist in time with nearby music, even when they dislike the song. When anxious, they unconsciously arrange objects into neat little rows.

Personality

Sovel is gentle, observant, and quietly funny, with the careful patience of someone accustomed to being underestimated. They prefer strange little venues, eccentric companions, and conversations that wander away from the expected subject. Their confidence appears in flashes, usually when defending another rejected artist or explaining an obscure piece of magical theory.

Ideals

Expression. A true voice is not the loudest one in the room. It is the one that makes people recognize something in themselves.

Bonds

The battered tuning fork that began the first pact is hidden inside Sovel's instrument case. They intend to discover whether it can be freed from the old patron, destroyed, or returned to the place where it was found.

Flaws

Sovel cannot resist proving that rejection was a mistake, even when doing so risks the safety of everyone nearby. They also conceal important information whenever they fear someone might decide they are strange, weak, or no longer useful.

Quirks

Keeps a private list of every place that rejected their performances, then visits those places in disguise.
Names every summoned familiar after a type of weather.
Refers to silence as if it were a person who might interrupt.
Collects broken tuning pegs and gives them to children who want to learn music.

Background

Sovel Orun was raised among traveling musicians who believed every child possessed a song worth hearing. Sovel believed it too, and spent years preparing for admission to the conservatory of the Silver Chord. Unfortunately, the faculty heard something less romantic in Sovel's music. Their voice was too restrained, their timing too strange, and their compositions seemed to pause at moments where a song ought to resolve. After a final audition ended with a polite rejection and an even politer suggestion that Sovel find another calling, they joined a small troupe as a stagehand, prop singer, and occasional comic relief. During a rain-soaked performance in a ruined observatory, Sovel discovered a black glass tuning fork hidden beneath the stage. When struck, it produced no sound, but every performer in the building suddenly forgot the next line of the play. Something vast and patient spoke through the silence. Sovel accepted its offer of power, initially believing the pact would finally give them the voice they had been denied. Recently, however, the old patron's presence began to feel like a borrowed costume. Sovel broke the original pact through a dangerous ritual and entered a new covenant with an intelligence beneath the spaces between stars. The new power is colder, stranger, and much more honest. Sovel still wants to become a bard, but now they suspect the greatest song may be the one no living audience can hear.
