Appearance
Gideon is a lean high elf with copper-brown skin, dark auburn hair cut short around the ears, and pale gray eyes that constantly track moving parts, exits, and shadows. He wears reinforced scale mail beneath a soot-stained green traveling coat, with brass fittings, leather tool loops, and a compact crossbow built into his gear. His most noticeable habit is the quiet, repeated checking of a thumb-sized brass dial at his wrist. When calm, his voice is precise and nearly whisper-soft. When frightened or angry, his breath catches between words and the dial begins clicking rapidly beneath his fingers.
Mannerisms
Gideon checks the brass dial at his wrist whenever someone says the word safe. He speaks in compact technical phrases, pauses to count under his breath before making dangerous decisions, and unconsciously leans toward mechanical noises as if they were whispers meant only for him.
Personality
Gideon is exacting, observant, and quietly compassionate. He remembers the names of ordinary people more readily than the names of famous heroes. He distrusts grand promises, prefers demonstrated competence, and becomes unexpectedly gentle around frightened children, injured animals, and anyone who is embarrassed by a mistake.
Ideals
Protection must be proven, not promised. A device, doctrine, or hero that cannot survive testing has no right to decide who lives.
Bonds
Morrow carries a small engraved plate bearing the names of the people lost in Auln Reith. Gideon will risk almost anything to recover the original Dawnbreak components and learn whether his town can be restored.
Flaws
Gideon treats every setback as proof that he has not suffered enough consequences yet. He withholds unfinished theories from allies, convinced that sharing incomplete work will only put more people at risk. In a crisis, he is prone to choosing the cleverest solution over the safest one.
Quirks
Background
Gideon was raised in Auln Reith, a small high elf settlement built around old silver mines and increasingly threatened by vampires. The attacks began as isolated disappearances, then became organized raids. While the town elders debated patrols and warding rituals, Gideon built. He designed The Dawnbreak, a magical engine meant to project a protective barrier around the settlement and repel undead creatures. Neighbors brought him copper, crystal, old lenses, and patient encouragement. For the first time in years, the town believed survival could be engineered. The Dawnbreak did activate, but its geometry inverted the warding field. Instead of creating a wall that drove vampires away, it broadcast the settlement's living essence like a beacon. The vampires came from miles away. Gideon escaped through a maintenance tunnel beneath the engine, carrying only his tools and a half-burned notebook. He emerged to silence, smoke, and the knowledge that every person who trusted him had paid for his mistake. Since then, he has devoted himself to artificery, vampiric anatomy, and the reconstruction of The Dawnbreak's failure. Old texts repeatedly mention Julian Graves, a relentless vampire hunter who documented weaknesses, feeding patterns, and methods of containment. Gideon has never met Graves, but treats his writings as the closest thing he has to a teacher. His mechanical wolf, Morrow, is both a field companion and a memorial, built from salvaged components recovered beneath the ruined device. Gideon now hunts vampires wherever they surface, seeking the materials and knowledge needed to understand The Dawnbreak, protect others, and eventually rebuild a safe home for the survivors who may still exist.
