Appearance
Kai is a broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, close-cropped black hair, and a narrow scar running from his left eyebrow to his cheek. His brown eyes are watchful and analytical rather than fierce. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a dark green military cloak, with a greatsword strapped across his back and several handaxes at his belt. His posture remains rigid even when resting, as though he is still waiting for an order.
Mannerisms
Kai checks exits whenever he enters a room, keeps his back near a wall, and silently counts his weapons before sleeping. When considering a difficult choice, he rubs the old company insignia between his thumb and forefinger.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and intensely dependable, Kai speaks in concise statements and dislikes theatrical displays of courage. He is patient with frightened civilians, respectful toward competent professionals, and blunt with anyone who treats soldiers as expendable resources. Beneath his controlled exterior is a dry sense of humor and a strong instinct to protect people who have no power to protect themselves.
Ideals
Practicality. A living person who can be saved today matters more than an elegant principle that saves no one.
Bonds
Kai carries the dented insignia of the company that was abandoned during the border campaign. He is determined to find the surviving veterans and make certain their names are remembered.
Flaws
Kai assumes every chain of command eventually becomes corrupt. He can be needlessly suspicious of leaders, refuses help when injured, and sometimes mistakes emotional attachment for a tactical weakness.
Quirks
Background
Kai was raised in a border settlement where every adult learned to stand watch before learning to celebrate. He joined the local army at seventeen, not from patriotism, but because the army offered food, structure, and a way to protect the people who had raised him. His strength made him a natural heavy infantryman, while his sharp memory and practical intelligence earned him assignments reading maps, maintaining supply records, and planning defensive positions. He became known for surviving impossible retreats and for carrying wounded comrades farther than anyone thought possible. During a disastrous campaign, Kai discovered that his commanders had abandoned an entire company to preserve their own reputation. He obeyed the retreat order, but never forgave the decision. After the war, he left the army with his rank intact and his faith in institutions broken. Now he travels as a mercenary and reluctant guardian, choosing contracts according to the people they protect rather than the banners they serve. Kai does not seek glory or justice in the abstract. He seeks workable outcomes, fewer graves, and the freedom to decide for himself when an order deserves obedience.
