Appearance
Maang is a lean human man with tawny skin, dark almond-shaped eyes, and thick black hair usually tied into a short, uneven tail. He wears a well-maintained leather coat patched with mismatched brown hides, soft-soled boots, and a red scarf faded nearly to rust. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice his habit of pausing before he speaks, as if listening for a distant sound, followed by a quiet throat-clearing. He favors his left side when standing still, but moves with quick, catlike changes of direction when walking through crowds.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, Maang pauses and takes a small breath through his nose, then clears his throat softly. He rarely walks in a straight line, preferring the edges of rooms and favoring his left side when standing. When nervous, he taps two fingers against his wrist as though counting invisible coins.
Personality
Maang is watchful, irreverent, and fiercely protective of people who are ignored by polite society. He treats danger like a puzzle and authority like an especially badly designed lock. He is quick to make jokes, quicker to notice who has not eaten, and slow to trust anyone who speaks too smoothly.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be trapped by birth, poverty, law, or someone else's greed. If a door is locked to keep people powerless, it deserves to be opened.
Bonds
The hidden children of his old neighborhood are his family. He sends coin and supplies whenever he can, and he will risk an impossible job to protect them from the gang that once controlled the market district.
Flaws
Maang cannot resist proving that a supposedly impossible lock, trap, or escape route can be beaten. He also has difficulty accepting honest generosity, assuming that every gift hides a debt or a hook.
Quirks
Background
Maang grew up beneath the market bridges of a crowded river city, where children learned early that hunger made poor company and locks were only suggestions. He survived by carrying messages, stealing fruit, and sleeping wherever the rain could not reach. His closest companion was a stray alley cat he called Meow, a name he adopted after the animal became the only creature that reliably came when called. A retired burglar eventually noticed that Maang never stole more than he needed and began teaching him the patient work of tumblers, hidden catches, and escape routes. When a gang of prosperous merchants began using the city watch to clear poor children from the markets, Maang stole their ledgers and exposed the scheme. The act made him a wanted criminal, but it also earned him the gratitude of dozens of people who had been cheated or driven from their homes. Now he travels as an adventurer, taking jobs that let him undermine cruel people, protect the overlooked, and acquire enough coin to establish a safe house for street children. He insists that every crew needs someone who can open the door, notice the trap, and leave the last ration where a hungry child can find it.
