While raging, you gain advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, a bonus to melee weapon damage rolls using Strength, and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. Rage lasts for 1 minute and ends early if you are knocked unconscious or end your turn without attacking a hostile creature or taking damage since your last turn.

Appearance

A small forest gnome with a broad, scarred grin, soot-smudged cheeks, and a mane of wild copper hair tied with bells and ribbon scraps. He wears patched carnival leathers over corded muscle, carries a massive greataxe nearly as tall as he is, and has faint streaks of blue paint around his eyes from old stage makeup. When angered, tiny sparks of illusionary light flicker around his fingertips like angry fireflies.

Mannerisms

He laughs a second too late, as if he is always waiting for the punchline to hit him. When excited or angry, he talks with his hands, and one hand is usually pretending to conduct an invisible audience.

Personality

Pip is exuberant, sharp-tongued, and surprisingly tender with anyone who has ever been laughed at. He treats fear like a game, but his kindness is genuine and often inconveniently heroic. He loves applause, hates pity, and responds to danger with the sort of cheerful madness that makes allies nervous and enemies regret everything.

Ideals

Freedom. Nobody gets to decide what a small person is worth, and nobody gets to define strength by size alone.

Bonds

He still carries his old troupe bell in a pouch at his belt, and he will risk his life before letting anyone else break it. He is hunting the noble who ruined the troupe and stole the ledger that proved they were being cheated.

Flaws

He cannot resist escalating a tense moment into a spectacle, even when subtlety would save lives. When someone calls him cute, harmless, or little, his judgment evaporates instantly.

Quirks

He bows after winning a fight, even if nobody is watching.
He names particularly dangerous weapons after rude audience members.
He practices angry faces in reflective surfaces and rates them like stage performances.

Background

Pip Thistledown was not born into a tribe of warriors or a tower of scholars. He was born behind a collapsing canvas tent, in a traveling oddities troupe that sold miracles, singsongs, and fake curses to whoever had coin. As a child, he learned early that people laughed longest when they were afraid to cry, so Pip became the act nobody could quite explain. He juggled knives, told filthy jokes, and made tiny glowing beasts dance in the air with gnome trickery. Then one night, a drunk noble tried to humiliate the troupe, and Pip, who had spent years being small and harmless, tore a table in half and broke the man’s jaw with it. After that, the crowd wanted one thing from him, the same thing they had always wanted, just louder. He became the carnival’s champion, the painted little monster in the ring, the laughing rage that turned ugly men into broken teeth and apologies. Pip hates how good it feels to lose control, but he loves the moment the world gasps and finally sees him. He wanders now, half performer and half avalanche, chasing rumors of a vanished mentor who taught him that fury can be a kind of stagecraft, if you know how to time the reveal.
