Appearance
Auguste is a broad-shouldered tiefling with dark red skin weathered by years of wind, dust, and military travel. His curled black horns are polished at the tips from habitual handling, and his long tail bears a brass military ring near its end. He keeps his violet-black hair cropped close beneath his helmet. He smells faintly of oiled leather, iron, and bitter herbal soap, a scent he considers evidence of proper maintenance. His uniform and armor are meticulously arranged, though repeatedly repaired at the seams. His eyes are amber-gold, steady and evaluating, and his expression rarely reveals more than he intends.
Mannerisms
He checks buckles, straps, and weapon grips whenever entering a new room. Before answering a difficult question, he silently counts three breaths. When someone gives an unclear order, he tilts his head slightly and repeats it back in exact terms.
Personality
Auguste is disciplined, observant, and restrained. He speaks with deliberate precision and tends to evaluate people by what they consistently do rather than what they claim to believe. He is unexpectedly patient with frightened civilians, recruits, and anyone willing to learn. Around trusted companions, his dry humor emerges in the form of literal interpretations and meticulous complaints about poor camp organization.
Ideals
Order. Civilization survives because people accept duty, follow clear laws, and do the work required when comfort would be easier.
Bonds
He carries the battered unit insignia of the soldiers who survived the bridge defense, and he will risk himself to protect any comrade who has been abandoned by incompetent leadership.
Flaws
Auguste confuses obedience with virtue when under stress. He is slow to forgive disorder, insubordination, or emotional decisions, and he would rather follow a flawed plan than admit that no plan exists.
Quirks
Background
Auguste was born in a frontier garrison where tieflings were tolerated because the walls needed defenders more than they needed comfortable opinions. His mother served as a quartermaster, and his human father was a drill instructor who believed that every problem could be improved by a written procedure. Auguste inherited his mother's talent for inventory and his father's devotion to order. He learned early that a soldier who knows exactly where every bandage, buckle, and blade belongs is less likely to panic when the horns sound. He entered the army as a clerk and scout, but battlefield necessity pushed him into the shield line. His talent for reading terrain and enemy formations soon earned him promotion. During one disastrous retreat, Auguste held a ruined bridge long enough for his unit to escape, not through heroics, but by enforcing a precise rotation of shields and spear points while others lost their nerve. The survivors still call it courage. Auguste calls it proper procedure under pressure. He now travels as a professional soldier between conflicts, investigating threats that may endanger civilians or destabilize the region. He obeys lawful authority, but his loyalty is ultimately to the chain of command that protects people rather than to any single ruler.
