Appearance
A lean, soot-black kenku with rust-red feathers along the throat and shoulders, narrow amber eyes, and a chipped ivory beak. Their vestments are practical rather than ornate, consisting of a weathered scale mail shirt beneath a patched gray prayer coat. A bronze holy symbol hangs from a cord around their neck, polished smooth by constant handling. Their shield bears no painted emblem, only layers of scraped-off markings from old identities.
Mannerisms
Moru tilts their head sharply before answering, as if selecting a voice from a crowded room. They tap their holy symbol three times before casting a healing spell, and they rarely speak in their natural rasp when a borrowed voice will do.
Personality
Quietly observant and relentlessly curious, Moru studies people before deciding which voice, posture, or truth will reach them. They are patient with the frightened and suspicious of anyone who claims moral purity. Though capable of elaborate deception, they have a soft spot for honest incompetence and will often help a person who admits they do not know what to do.
Ideals
Truth is a tool, not a trophy. The right secret in the right hands can save more lives than an honest sermon shouted at the wrong crowd.
Bonds
The river shrine that gave me a second life must never be allowed to fall into the hands of a corrupt priesthood. I also protect the families of people whose secrets I uncovered, even when they cannot know who helped them.
Flaws
I lie reflexively, even when the truth would be safer. When someone asks who I really am, I become evasive, theatrical, or cruel rather than admit that I am not sure there is a single answer.
Quirks
Background
Moru Saki learned early that a kenku could survive by borrowing what others had left behind. In the alleys around the river markets, they repeated merchants' calls, priests' blessings, and guards' commands until they could pass as almost anyone for a few minutes at a time. Their first successful con involved a counterfeit blessing from a traveling shrine, but the victim was a dying dockworker who genuinely believed the words. When the man recovered, he sought Moru out, not to punish them, but to ask for another prayer. Moru had no answer of their own, so they repeated the blessing and stayed until dawn. That night began an uneasy apprenticeship with the shrine's aging keeper. Moru discovered that faith was not merely a voice borrowed from someone else. It was a promise made repeatedly, especially when no one was watching. They kept their old false identity, using it to infiltrate cults, expose fraudulent healers, and gather secrets for those who could not safely speak. Their god granted them the Knowledge Domain, rewarding curiosity and demanding that every lie eventually serve a truth. Now Moru travels as a humble cleric, carrying forged papers under three different names, helping ordinary people while trying to determine whether their own voice exists beneath all the voices they have collected.
“When the man recovered, he sought Moru out, not to punish them, but to ask for another prayer.”
