Appearance
A lean, white-scaled dragonborn with a narrow muzzle, swept-back horns, and pale blue eyes that catch the light like glacial ice. His scales are matte ivory along the face and neck, fading to blue-white on his hands and tail. He dresses in layered scholar's robes beneath a travel-worn gray cloak, with his spellbook secured in a waterproof case. He is unusually careful about how much space he occupies, often standing half a step behind others even when he is the most knowledgeable person present. Before speaking, he takes a quiet breath through his nose and briefly presses his thumb to the edge of his spellbook.
Mannerisms
He pauses, inhales softly, and clears his throat before answering, especially when more than one person is listening. He keeps one hand on his spellbook when anxious, aligns loose papers by their corners, and lowers his voice rather than raising it when excited. In conversation, he often begins with 'I believe' and then quietly provides a much stronger argument than his hesitant opening suggested.
Personality
Shy, observant, and unfailingly courteous, Varkszeg is more comfortable with a difficult text than with casual conversation. His curiosity is nearly inexhaustible, and he becomes animated when discussing magical theory, ancient languages, or the practical uses of seemingly minor spells. He dislikes being the center of attention, but he cannot resist correcting a dangerous misunderstanding.
Ideals
Knowledge should reduce suffering. Every discovery is worthwhile only if it can eventually be used to preserve life, prevent cruelty, or give ordinary people more control over their own fate.
Bonds
The monastery archivist who gave him his first chance still sends him letters, and Varkszeg would risk much to recover any stolen or damaged books from her collection.
Flaws
When presented with an unfamiliar magical phenomenon, he may keep investigating long after caution, sleep, or social obligations should have stopped him. He also tends to assume that anyone who speaks confidently about magic knows what they are talking about, at least until the evidence proves otherwise.
Quirks
Background
Varkszeg was raised among a small white dragonborn community that valued endurance, practical work, and the preservation of ancestral stories. He was a quiet child, more interested in frost patterns on window glass than in contests of strength. When an itinerant archivist noticed him reconstructing a damaged inscription from memory, she arranged for him to work in a monastery library. There, Varkszeg copied catalogues, repaired bindings, and read everything he could reach, gradually becoming fascinated by the rules that made magic repeatable rather than merely wondrous. His apprenticeship ended after he discovered a set of contradictory references to a vanished school of winter magic. The texts suggested that cold was not simply an element, but a condition that could preserve memories, halt decay, and reveal hidden structures. Varkszeg left the monastery with his first spellbook, a handful of carefully chosen spells, and an overwhelming list of questions. He now travels as a reluctant adventurer, hoping to find the lost source of the references while helping people caught in dangers he would much rather study from a safe distance. His kindness is genuine, but his curiosity has a habit of opening doors before he has considered what might be waiting behind them.
