His ears are tipped with small brass rings, and his whiskers are often dusted with ink. He smells faintly of cedar shelves, lamp oil, and the sharp metallic tang of old coins, a scent he has grown so accustomed to that he assumes everyone smells that way. His hands are unusually expressive, with ink-stained fingertips, callused pads, and nimble claws dulled by years of turning pages, repairing bindings, and playing a small lute. He dresses in a scholar’s robe beneath a travel-worn leather coat, with colored ribbons tied around his wrists to mark quotations he intends to remember.

Щабель is relentlessly curious, courteous in the manner of a professional interrogator, and easily distracted by unusual handwriting, antique locks, or contradictory footnotes. He enjoys an audience but prefers being admired for accuracy rather than charm. He treats conversation as collaborative research, asking precise questions and remembering tiny details that others forget. Despite his theatrical bardic style, he is most comfortable in quiet libraries, abandoned observatories, and rooms where everyone else has already gone to sleep.

Щабель was born among a wandering tabaxi caravan whose elders collected stories as carefully as other people collected jewels. His curiosity, however, was directed less toward distant horizons than toward the marks left behind by those who had passed through them. He learned to read from damaged trade ledgers, temple rubbings, and the marginal notes of dead travelers. A retired archivist noticed his remarkable memory and brought him to a university library, where Щабель became an apprentice copyist, translator, and eventually an investigator of obscure magical texts. His career ended when he discovered that a celebrated historical chronicle had been deliberately altered to conceal the disappearance of an entire expedition. The archivist who helped him investigate the matter died before they could identify who had changed the record, leaving Щабель with a single unanswered question and a letter addressed to an unknown colleague. Now he travels as a bard, trading songs and performances for access to private collections, gathering eyewitness accounts, and testing every legend against the evidence. His music is precise, strange, and unexpectedly moving, often built around fragments of forgotten languages. He believes every story deserves to be heard, but not every story deserves to be believed.
