  • Eldritch CannonLevel 3

Brannoc can create a Small or Tiny eldritch cannon during a long rest or by expending a spell slot. The cannon is a magical object with AC 18, 5 hit points per artificer level, immunity to poison and psychic damage, and a 60-foot range for its activated effects. As a bonus action, Brannoc can command it to make a Flamethrower, Force Ballista, or Protector effect.

  • TraitDwarfStonecunning, allowing Brannoc to activate Tremorsense for 10 minutes as a Bonus Action while touching a stone surface, detecting vibrations within 60 feet.

Brannoc activates the eldritch cannon's Protector mode, granting temporary hit points to creatures of his choice within 10 feet of it.

    Family Test Tokens
A set of six tiny brass tokens, each bearing one of Brannoc's brothers' initials and used to mark successful field tests.

Appearance

Brannoc is a broad-shouldered male dwarf with copper-brown skin, a square beard braided with bits of brass wire, and alert gray eyes magnified by a pair of hinged workshop lenses. His left eyebrow is singed away from a testing accident. He wears reinforced scale mail beneath a stained leather apron, with a shield mounted to his rucksack by a quick-release harness. The rucksack looks ordinary, but its frame is packed with nested tools, spare mechanisms, folded tripods, ammunition cases, and several devices that occasionally whir or click on their own.

Mannerisms

Brannoc speaks in quick bursts, then pauses to count silently on his fingers. He taps metal surfaces before trusting them, smells unfamiliar oil, and often sketches diagrams in the air with one grimy finger. When excited, he refers to his rucksack as if it were a junior partner.

Personality

Brannoc is eager, inquisitive, and incapable of treating a mystery as anything other than an invitation. He is warm with practical people, suspicious of grand speeches, and genuinely delighted when someone improves one of his designs. He asks questions at inconvenient times, but he remembers the answers and uses them to make better tools.

Ideals

Useful wonder. Ingenuity matters most when it makes difficult work safer, gives ordinary people more freedom, and leaves them with more choices than they had before.

Bonds

His family workshop and the reputation of his two brothers are both precious to him. He carries the first working gear from his ore sorter and will risk himself to recover any design stolen from the Cleft-Cog guild bench.

Flaws

He cannot leave an unfamiliar mechanism alone, even when it is clearly dangerous, cursed, or currently holding a door shut. Brannoc also overpromises because he hates admitting that an idea may need more time, more money, or fewer explosions.

Quirks

Names every prototype before testing it, usually after a food or mining accident.
Keeps a notebook titled Things That Should Not Have Worked.
Collects broken buttons, buckles, and springs because each might reveal a better mechanism.
Whistles three descending notes whenever he is about to try something unsafe.
Refuses to call an explosion a failure unless no useful data was produced.

Background

Brannoc Cleft-Cog was born between two brothers who seemed destined for entirely different kinds of certainty. His elder brother, Orvi, could look at a bar of iron and see the finished shape hidden inside it. His younger brother, Tovin, found purpose in oaths, armor, and the protection of strangers. Brannoc saw none of those things. He saw hinges that could move without squeaking, water wheels that could turn in dry seasons, lanterns that could burn without oil, and a hundred other questions waiting to be taken apart. As a young guild apprentice, Brannoc became known for building useful devices from scraps that other smiths discarded. His finest failure was a self-loading ore sorter that hurled gravel through the workshop roof and buried Orvi's chimney. Rather than disown him, his family helped him rebuild it, and Brannoc began carrying his expanding workshop in a deceptively large rucksack. He now travels as an artificer and licensed guild craftsperson, testing designs in mines, border settlements, and growing industrial towns. His ambition is not merely to become famous. He wants the Cleft-Cog family to become the name people trust when a new age demands a better machine, and he intends to make sure that age serves ordinary folk instead of grinding them beneath its wheels.
