Features
18 featuresBonus action
- Bardic Inspiration, d6Level 1
As a bonus action, Ug can inspire one creature within 60 feet that can hear him. That creature gains one d6 Bardic Inspiration die, usable within 10 minutes to add to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. Ug can use this feature three times per long rest.
Reaction
- Cutting Refrain
When When a creature Ug can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or damage roll.
Ug punctuates an enemy's mistake with a mocking musical phrase, reducing its attack roll, ability check, or damage roll by 1d6 as a reaction.
Always on
- Polka Panic
When As an action, when Ug can perform and at least one hostile creature can hear him.
Ug unleashes an aggressively cheerful burst of bagpipe music, forcing one creature within 60 feet that can hear him to make a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed and incapacitated until the end of Ug's next turn, unless it takes damage or Ug becomes incapacitated.
- SpellcastingLevel 1
Ug can use a musical instrument as a spellcasting focus and cast bard spells using Charisma. He knows two cantrips and six bard spells, and he can prepare no spells because bards know their spells rather than preparing them.
- Jack of All TradesLevel 2
Ug adds half his proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any ability check he makes that does not already include his proficiency bonus. This includes initiative checks and certain spellcasting ability checks.
- Song of Rest, d6Level 2
Ug can use soothing music or stirring words during a short rest to help allies regain hit points. Any friendly creature that hears his performance and spends Hit Dice to regain hit points regains an extra 1d6 hit points.
- ExpertiseLevel 3
Ug gains expertise in Persuasion and Survival. His proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check using either skill.
- Bard College, College of LoreLevel 3
Ug joins the College of Lore, gaining the Cutting Words feature and proficiency with three additional skills.
- Cutting WordsLevel 3
When a creature Ug can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or damage roll, Ug can use his reaction to expend a Bardic Inspiration die and subtract the roll from the creature's result. He can choose to use this after the roll is made but before the DM determines whether the roll succeeds.
- Additional Magical SecretsLevel 3
Ug knows two additional spells of 1st level or higher from any class. These spells count as bard spells for him but do not count against his number of bard spells known.
- Fascinate, College of LoreLevel 3
Ug can use his action to begin a musical performance that lasts until the end of his next turn. Until then, any hostile creature within 30 feet that can hear him must make a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed. While charmed, the creature is incapacitated and has a speed of 0. The effect ends if the creature takes damage, if Ug is incapacitated, or if Ug's turn ends.
- TraitHalf-OrcDarkvision, Ug can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light, though darkness appears gray.
- TraitHalf-OrcMenacing, Ug is proficient in the Intimidation skill.
- TraitHalf-OrcRelentless Endurance, when reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, Ug can drop to 1 hit point instead. This can be used once per long rest.
- TraitHalf-OrcSavage Attacks, when Ug scores a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, he can roll one of the weapon's damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage.
- TraitHalf-OrcHalf-orc ability score increases, +2 Strength and +1 Constitution.
- TraitHalf-OrcOrcish and Common languages.
- WandererOutlander
Ug has an excellent memory for maps, terrain, and landmarks. He can find food and fresh water for himself and up to five other people each day, provided the land offers natural resources. He also remembers the general layout of settlements and wilderness regions he has visited.

Appearance
Ug the Rock is a broad-shouldered half-orc with a compact, powerful build, olive-gray skin, and a high topknot bound with bright red cord. His most noticeable possession is Hammy, his homemade bagpipe, carried in a weathered leather case patched with scraps of blue and yellow cloth. The case is worn smooth where his left hand grips it during performances. Ug speaks in a surprisingly warm, gravelly baritone, but when rattled his breathing becomes fast and musical, producing little wheezing notes that sound suspiciously like a badly tuned kazoo. He wears practical travel clothes, a leather vest, sturdy boots, and a necklace strung with the tusk of the boar whose hide became Hammy.
Mannerisms
Ug taps complex rhythms against his thigh whenever he is thinking. Before beginning a difficult conversation, he takes a deep breath through his nose and quietly mouths the first three notes of a song. When excited, his speech speeds up until it resembles a shouted musical count-in.
Personality
Ug is enthusiastic, observant, and relentlessly encouraging. He treats every stranger as a potential audience member and every difficult journey as a song that has not yet found its rhythm. He enjoys clever plans, improbable escapes, and people who refuse to be defined by their origins. Beneath his confidence is a constant awareness that others are judging whether he is truly an orc, truly a bard, or truly competent. He answers that judgment with a grin, a louder note, and a plan that usually works.
Ideals
Freedom. No tribe, lord, tradition, or audience gets to decide what a person is allowed to become. The world is too large for anyone to live inside a single expectation.
Bonds
Hammy is more than an instrument. It is Ug's first true creation, made from the hide of a wild boar he hunted alone. He believes the spirit of that boar lives in every note, and he will risk almost anything to protect Hammy from being stolen, broken, or played badly.
Flaws
Ug cannot resist turning a tense situation into a performance, even when silence would be wiser. He is also painfully sensitive about being called small, and may accept an obviously foolish challenge rather than let the insult pass.
Quirks
Background
Ug was never like the other children in his orc tribe. He was smaller, quicker, and far less interested in proving himself through brute force. When the other youths tried to corner him, Ug learned to distract them with jokes, false trails, and sudden changes of direction. When trickery failed, he fought smarter, using rocks, roots, mud, and whatever else the landscape offered. His unusual habit of studying the world around him eventually made him one of the tribe's best pathfinders, even if nobody quite knew what to make of his constant humming.
