Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with weathered hands, a close-cropped dark beard, and alert gray eyes. He wears reinforced scale mail polished to a dull military sheen, a practical shield marked with precise repair sigils, and a tool belt crowded with chisels, clamps, vials, and measured bundles of wire. His warhammer is clean, balanced, and treated more like a precision instrument than a weapon. He carries himself like an inspection report made flesh, stern, tidy, and always ready to solve a problem with either discipline or a cleverly assembled machine.
Mannerisms
He taps a finger against his thumb when thinking, as if counting invisible rivets. He stands at attention even in casual conversation, corrects the alignment of nearby objects without noticing, and unconsciously uses military shorthand when issuing advice.
Personality
Calm, exacting, and quietly protective, Calder speaks with the measured confidence of a veteran quartermaster. He respects competence, keeps his promises, and values preparation over bravado. In battle he is unflinching and methodical, while in camp he is the one repairing gear, sharpening tools, and making sure everyone else has what they need before he rests.
Ideals
Duty. A promise made in uniform should hold its weight long after the battle is over. Order is not about obedience for its own sake, it is about creating conditions where ordinary people can survive.
Bonds
He still keeps a list of the names of every soldier who died under his command, and he updates it whenever a surviving comrade falls. He feels responsible for protecting the fort where he was trained, even though he no longer serves there, and he sends pay, parts, and letters back whenever he can.
Flaws
He trusts plans more than people, and when a situation becomes emotionally messy he can become cold, pedantic, or stubbornly procedural. He has trouble admitting when a gut feeling is right if it cannot be justified by evidence, and he sometimes treats allies like parts of a machine that should simply function properly.
Quirks
Background
Calder Voss was raised in a border fort where every meal, map, and patrol schedule was ruled by procedure. He learned early that a loose bolt could doom a gate, a missed order could cost a squad, and a disciplined mind could keep chaos from turning into a massacre. He was never the strongest recruit, but he was the one who could repair a snapped axle under rain, reinforce a shield rim before dawn, or improvise a brace for a collapsed bridge while everyone else argued about who was at fault. His superiors eventually stopped asking why he spent nights studying tools instead of sharpening blades, because his inventions kept soldiers alive. During a brutal campaign against raiders and their hired saboteurs, Calder watched a siege engine fail at the worst possible moment, leaving a section of wall exposed. He held the breach long enough for civilians to evacuate, but the experience convinced him that bravery without craftsmanship was merely a slower form of waste. After the war, he left the army with his rank intact, his loyalty unbroken, and his trust narrowed to systems he could inspect with his own hands. Now he travels as an artificer, building dependable answers to ugly problems, a man who believes that order is not cruelty, it is mercy made practical.
