Appearance
Lynx is a lean, copper-red tiefling with swept-back black hair, short swept horns wrapped in brass wire, and a long tail that moves constantly when he is thinking. He favors his left side when standing still, as though always leaving room for an unseen stage partner. His eyes rarely settle on faces. They track hands, tools, pockets, exits, and anything in the room that might produce an interesting sound. He dresses like a traveling performer who has gradually replaced every decorative item with a useful device, wearing a patched burgundy coat, reinforced scale mail, a bandolier of alchemical cartridges, and a heavy shield fitted with a collapsible brass cannon.
Mannerisms
Lynx speaks to his inventions as though they are fellow performers, giving each one a cue before using it. When nervous, he silently counts nearby doors and taps his thumb against each finger in the rhythm of a marching song. He often leans toward mechanical noises, even during conversations.
Personality
Lynx is theatrical, opportunistic, and relentlessly curious. He can charm a room within seconds, but his attention is always divided between the conversation and the nearest interesting mechanism. He prefers clever solutions to honest ones, though he is more loyal than he wants anyone to know. He laughs at his own jokes, applauds when his plans work, and calls every escape a successful finale.
Ideals
Freedom. The world is full of rules written by people who were afraid to experiment. A clever person should be allowed to try, fail, and set off at least one impressive explosion.
Bonds
The old theater troupe is his family, and he will risk almost anything to keep its wagons, performers, and reputation safe. He also treasures the cracked brass casing of his first clockwork dove, which he refuses to admit was a failure.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a working device, especially when doing so would be dangerous, illegal, or dramatically inconvenient. Lynx treats serious situations as performances and may keep escalating a problem simply because the audience has not applauded yet.
Quirks
Background
Lynx was raised among a wandering infernal theater troupe that survived by making audiences laugh before they had time to wonder whether a tiefling belonged on the stage. He learned juggling, acrobatics, sleight of hand, and the practical art of turning broken props into convincing illusions. His favorite act involved a clockwork dove that exploded into a cloud of harmless crimson smoke. The dove was not harmless during its first three performances, but the audience never knew that, and Lynx considered the resulting applause a form of scientific validation. His talent for mechanisms drew him away from ordinary stagecraft. He began repairing the troupe's wagons, designing spring-loaded scenery, and building tiny devices that could mimic voices or throw light across a room. A retired gnome artificer eventually recognized the pattern in his work and taught him the fundamentals of infusion, spellwork, and magical engineering. Lynx now travels as both performer and inventor, presenting his gadgets as theatrical wonders while quietly testing their limits in dangerous places. He is searching for the scattered components of a device he calls the Grand Applause Engine, a machine capable of producing a single sound so magnificent that even devils would stop to listen.
