Appearance
Varek retains the posture of a high noble, standing tall despite his years in the shadows. He wears expensive silk doublets of charcoal and deep indigo, trimmed with tarnished silver thread. A silver half-mask, designed to resemble a smiling skull, hides the upper part of his face. He is never seen without his dark, fur-lined cloak or his two silent, armored enforcers.
Mannerisms
He slowly adjusts his silver cufflinks whenever he is about to lie or offer a particularly dangerous deal.
Personality
He is charismatic but chillingly controlled. Varek never raises his voice, instead using a measured, deliberate tone that forces listeners to lean in. Every interaction is a transaction for him. He views people as assets or obstacles, and he is always thinking three steps ahead of the person across the table.
Ideals
Leverage. Knowledge and secrets are the only currencies that never lose value. Control is far more reliable than law.
Bonds
My black market is my life's work, it is the only throne I have left, and I will burn any city that tries to seize it.
Flaws
I am unable to trust even my closest allies, believing that everyone has a price and is eventually prepared to sell me out.
Quirks
Background
Born Varek Valerius, he was once a respected magistrate within the Imperial Courts. However, his private appetites for dark magic and his habit of eliminating political rivals through illegal trade deals eventually came to light. Stripped of his noble lineage and exiled to the borderlands, he did not rot in poverty. Instead, he utilized his knowledge of law and its loopholes to found the Sunless Market, an underground hub for everything the empire forbids. He has turned his disgrace into a kingdom of his own. While the empire officially considers him a dead man, many high ranking officials still send their agents to his table to acquire items the light of day cannot touch. He rules through a combination of fear, secrets, and the undeniable utility he provides to those in power.
