Appearance
Miklos Vardani is a broad-shouldered human man with weather-darkened skin, a close-cropped beard, and thick brown hair beginning to silver at the temples. His hands are heavily callused from climbing, reins, weapons, and rough fieldwork. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he repeatedly checks the small brass clasp of his cloak, rubbing it between thumb and forefinger whenever he is thinking. He wears battered chain mail beneath a faded green travel cloak, and keeps his shield marked with a simple white mountain line rather than a heraldic emblem.
Mannerisms
He rubs the brass clasp of his cloak when thinking, taps his thumb against the rim of his shield before entering danger, and gives directions using landmarks rather than compass points. He tends to stand where he can see every exit.
Personality
Miklos is patient, observant, and quietly warm, especially toward tired travelers, hungry children, and animals that have been mistreated. He dislikes boasting but respects competence, and he treats every journey as a shared responsibility. He speaks plainly, listens longer than most people expect, and becomes unexpectedly funny when describing the absurd dangers of mountain travel.
Ideals
The strong owe protection to those the road has left exposed. A good deed is worth doing even when no one will record it, reward it, or remember it.
Bonds
He carries the brass clasp from his mother's wayhouse cloak. He has sworn to keep open the mountain roads and protect isolated settlements that have no lord powerful enough to defend them.
Flaws
He assumes that anyone who has never traveled beyond comfortable roads simply has not yet been tested. When frightened or uncertain, he becomes controlling and starts issuing practical orders instead of admitting fear. He also has a dangerous habit of staying behind to solve everyone else's problems, even when retreat is the wiser choice.
Quirks
Background
Miklos Vardani was born in a frontier settlement where the last ploughed fields gave way to steep pasture and pine forest. His mother kept a small wayhouse for shepherds, traders, and pilgrims, while his father served as a trail guide and occasional caravan guard. Miklos learned early to read weather in the shape of clouds, judge distance by the sound of a river, and sleep lightly with one hand on a weapon. When raiders burned several outlying farms, he joined the settlement militia, not from love of battle, but because he could not stand watching families lose the only roads they knew.
