Appearance
Marcelline Qazbek is a young-looking human woman with almond-shaped blue eyes, light skin, and short, wavy copper hair combed back from her face. Smallpox scars mark both cheeks. She wears a severely dirt-stained white kimono with open shoulders over a gray halter bodysuit, a plain brown corset as a belt, brown forearm braces, dark leather pants, and long boots. Numerous rings and earrings give her an unexpectedly ostentatious appearance. A half-mask covers her chin and cheeks, concealing some of her scars and making her calm expressions difficult to read. Her spellbook is bound in treated mine leather and carries the metallic scent of copper dust.
Mannerisms
She checks the pulse of anyone who sits still for too long, straightens other people's bandages without asking, and taps her left index finger three times against her corset before casting a healing or protective spell. When annoyed, she lowers her voice rather than raising it. She frequently pauses before answering, as if consulting an invisible patient chart.
Personality
Mara is observant, disciplined, and intensely attentive to physical signs of distress. She speaks with gentle precision and remembers the names of patients, their allergies, and the lies they told about how badly they were hurt. She wants to be useful more than she wants to be admired, but her need to control a crisis can make her seem patronizing. Beneath her composure is a woman terrified that one moment of inattention will leave someone else hanging helplessly in the dark.
Ideals
Preservation. A life is not less valuable because its owner is foolish, poor, frightened, or unwilling to accept help. I will keep people alive long enough to choose better.
Bonds
Bernard Veshar's signet ring hangs on a chain beneath her bodysuit. She intends to find the cannibals who killed him, though she has never admitted that revenge matters as much to her as healing. She also feels responsible for proving that the money spent on her education was not wasted.
Flaws
When afraid, I become polite in the way a locked door is polite. I tell people what they need, override their choices, and call it care. I also judge anyone who refuses treatment as though their refusal were a personal insult.
Quirks
Background
Marcelline Qazbek was born into a wealthy mining family whose fortune came from a deep, dangerous copper and silver mine. Her parents purchased her admission to a prestigious wizarding academy, then quietly arranged grants and donations that ensured her place remained secure throughout her studies. Marcelline was never the brilliant prodigy they expected. She graduated as an average student, competent in theory, patient with difficult practical work, and unusually drawn to restorative and protective magic. Her finest achievement was a set of transmutation techniques that could stabilize injuries, purge certain poisons, and create temporary magical hands for restraining attackers or applying pressure to wounds. Her professors called the work useful. Her parents called it disappointing. She became engaged to Bernard Veshar, a watchman and capable warrior who respected her without treating her as a family investment. Bernard died while traveling with a party of four that was ambushed by cannibals. Marcelline found him in a cave chamber, hanged upside down like a slaughtered pig, his throat and wrists cut, his blood drained. The discovery broke something in her. Since then, she has traveled as a healer, insisting that no one under her care will be abandoned, ignored, or allowed to make what she considers a foolish medical decision. Her magic has grown formidable, but her fear has grown alongside it. When frightened, she becomes controlling and quietly patronizing, especially toward people who refuse her help.
“Marcelline was never the brilliant prodigy they expected.”
