Appearance
Deborah is a towering goliath woman with slate-gray skin, broad shoulders, and a powerful, athletic build. She wears her black hair in a thick braided crown threaded with small iron rings, and pale geometric birthmarks run from her left temple down the side of her neck. Her deep voice begins with a brief, thoughtful pause before each sentence, as though she is weighing whether the words are worth the effort. She is difficult to overlook in any room, not only because of her height, but because she unconsciously stands as if making space for everyone else.
Mannerisms
Before answering, Deborah pauses and draws a slow breath through her nose. She addresses people by rank or full name until invited to do otherwise, and when listening she leans forward so intensely that smaller people sometimes mistake it for an impending attack.
Personality
Deborah is patient with the frightened, practical with the proud, and unexpectedly scholarly when discussing logistics, engineering, or old military campaigns. She dislikes waste, vague promises, and leaders who speak about sacrifice without naming who will suffer. Though she appears stern, she has a dry sense of humor and a deep tenderness for cooks, stable hands, camp followers, and anyone who keeps a group alive without receiving praise.
Ideals
Protection. Strength exists to shelter the vulnerable, not to make the strong comfortable.
Bonds
I will return to the mountain pass where my soldiers were abandoned, and I will learn who decided their lives were expendable.
Flaws
I treat hesitation as a moral failure, and when frightened or uncertain I become controlling, blunt, and dangerously eager to decide for everyone.
Quirks
Background
Deborah was raised among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, usefulness, and the willingness to carry more than one's share. She had an unusual appetite for questions, especially about maps, supply routes, siege engines, and the reasons commanders made decisions. Her clan expected her to become a hunter or champion, but Deborah found herself fascinated by the quiet structure behind every great feat of strength. She learned that a strong arm could break a door, while a prepared mind could ensure there was food, shelter, and an escape route when the door opened onto disaster. She joined a frontier army as a standard-bearer and later served as a heavy infantry sergeant. Her imposing size made her a natural rallying point, but her soldiers followed her because she remembered every name, ration, promise, and debt. During a disastrous retreat, Deborah held a mountain pass long enough for a company of wounded soldiers and refugees to escape. She survived, but the army abandoned the position and its defenders in the political aftermath. Deborah left with her military insignia, a battered set of campaign tokens, and a quiet conviction that courage means little if it is not used to protect people who cannot protect themselves. Now she travels as a mercenary, caravan guard, and occasional problem-solver, seeking worthy causes rather than worthy pay.
