Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, close-cropped dark hair, and a square beard beginning to silver at the jaw. His gray-green eyes are steady and watchful. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a faded blue surcoat, carries a battered shield marked with his family seal, and keeps his hands rough from years of sword drills, stable work, and field marches.
Mannerisms
He straightens his cuffs before making a difficult decision and addresses servants, soldiers, and nobles with the same formal courtesy. When irritated, he taps two fingers against the rim of his shield as if counting down to a command.
Personality
Reserved, punctual, and quietly observant. Matti speaks plainly, dislikes waste, and has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when everyone else is exhausted. He is courteous by habit, but his courtesy becomes unmistakably cold when someone abuses their position.
Ideals
Order. A just rule, consistently applied, protects more people than personal freedom without responsibility.
Bonds
His younger sister, Salla, is the only member of his family who openly supported his decision to leave. He sends her part of every reward and will risk almost anything to keep the Veyra name from becoming a stain on her future.
Flaws
He cannot leave an insult to his family's honor unanswered, even when silence would be wiser. He also judges people too quickly by whether they keep appointments, maintain their tools, and obey clearly stated rules.
Quirks
Background
Matti Veyra was born into a minor human noble house whose wealth came from a river crossing, a granary, and the careful collection of tolls. His family had enough standing to be invited to court, but not enough power to be safe there. From childhood, Matti was taught that rank was a responsibility measured by what happened to the people beneath it. He learned letters from a household tutor, etiquette from his mother, and practical discipline from the old armsmaster who insisted that a noble unable to stand in a shield line was little more than an expensive ornament. When a winter flood destroyed several villages under his family's protection, the local lord delayed relief while arguing over jurisdiction and fees. Matti disobeyed his father's orders, opened the family stores, and led a mixed group of guards, laborers, and farmers through the flooded roads. The decision saved lives but cost his family influence, and Matti left home rather than let the scandal become a permanent burden on his younger sister. He now travels as a soldier and envoy, trying to prove that authority is earned by keeping promises. He still knows how to sit at a noble table, but he trusts a tired watchman and a repaired wagon wheel more than polished speeches.
