Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with olive-brown skin, a weathered face, and dark hair worn in a loose braid tied with red thread. His left eyebrow bears a thin white scar from the night his family died. He keeps his chain mail carefully polished but leaves one small link blackened, a private memorial to the burned doorway of his childhood home. His shield bears no heraldry, only a hand-drawn circle surrounding four small stars.
Mannerisms
Ilario writes down the names of everyone he meets, even if he has met them before. Before entering a building, he touches the blackened chain link at his throat and silently counts four breaths.
Personality
Ilario is patient with frightened people, children, animals, and anyone who reminds him of home. He is formal without being stiff, often offering practical help before asking personal questions. Beneath his calm is a relentless alertness. He notices exits, unlit corners, unusual symbols, and anyone who avoids speaking their full name.
Ideals
Mercy is not weakness. The innocent deserve protection before judgment, and even an enemy deserves the chance to reveal the truth before punishment is delivered.
Bonds
I carry the blackened chain link from my family home. I will not rest until I find the cult, learn why my family was chosen, and give every victim a name.
Flaws
When I encounter secretive religious groups, I assume the worst and may sabotage diplomacy before I have proof. I also fear that the cult's leader knew my name before the fire, a possibility I refuse to discuss.
Quirks
Background
Before the fire, Ilario Veyamori was the eldest son of a family that repaired bells, shrine lanterns, and ceremonial armor for villages along the eastern roads. His mother taught him to read prayers in three scripts, while his father taught him that a vow was useful only when someone was willing to keep it. On the night of the new moon, strangers wearing pale masks entered their home without breaking the door. They spoke a litany that made the household dogs whine, then killed everyone except Ilario, who survived beneath the floorboards with his little sister's red thread wrapped around his wrist. By dawn, the house was ash, and the masked figures had vanished without leaving ordinary footprints.
