Appearance
Monaco is a powerfully built human woman of medium height, with sun-browned skin, broad shoulders, and heavily muscled arms marked by old training scars. Her black hair is shaved close on one side and braided tightly on the other, with a strip of red cloth tied at the end. Her gray eyes are sharp and restless, and a broken nose gives her face a permanently defiant cast. She wears practical hide and travel clothes beneath a battered cloak, leaving her arms free for combat.
Mannerisms
Monaco unconsciously performs military drills whenever she is nervous, including checking exits, measuring distances, and flexing her fingers before a fight. She speaks in clipped battlefield phrases, rarely sits with her back to a door, and rolls her dice across her knuckles when thinking.
Personality
Blunt, fearless, and fiercely independent, Monaco has the practical instincts of a veteran soldier and the patience of a lit fuse. She respects courage more than manners, competence more than authority, and anyone willing to share danger more than anyone offering praise. Beneath her hard exterior, she is protective of stragglers, deserters, and people who have been abandoned by those in power.
Ideals
Freedom. No commander, monarch, god, or institution has the right to spend another person’s life without standing in the danger themselves.
Bonds
The surviving soldiers of the Veyr Hollow garrison are her chosen family. She will cross almost any distance to protect one of them or uncover the truth about their abandonment.
Flaws
Monaco treats compromise as weakness and obedience as a trap. She is quick to escalate a disagreement, especially when she thinks someone is hiding behind rank, wealth, or procedure. She also has a dangerous habit of seeking the strongest opponent in any conflict, even when retreat would be wiser.
Quirks
Background
Monaco remembers very little of life before the army. She was raised in a hard border settlement where children learned early that walls were promises, not protection. When she came of age, she enlisted and discovered that military discipline suited her better than civilian life. Orders were simple, formations were honest, and every problem had a direction in which to swing an axe. She became a shock trooper, valued for her ability to break enemy lines and keep moving after wounds that should have stopped her. Her faith in the army ended during the Siege of Veyr Hollow. Commanders abandoned her unit to preserve a noble’s estate, leaving Monaco and a handful of soldiers to hold a ruined gate against overwhelming forces. She survived, but only after abandoning formation and giving herself fully to the fury that had always lived beneath her training. The gate held. Her commanding officer did not, and Monaco was blamed for disobedience when the truth became politically inconvenient. She walked away before the execution order could arrive, carrying a spear from the fallen garrison and a battered set of gaming dice from her closest friend. Now Monaco travels as a mercenary, caravan guard, and occasional troublemaker. She claims she fights for coin, but she is drawn to anyone being sacrificed by people safely behind the lines. She has no interest in serving another banner, yet she still wakes before dawn to practice the old drills. Part of her wants to prove that she was right to abandon obedience. Another part is waiting for someone worthy to give her an order she can believe in.
