Appearance
Ndembe Mavuno is a slender male elf of medium height with pale ivory skin, luminous gold eyes, and long blue-green hair that falls in loose, theatrical waves to his waist. His exquisitely fitted studded leather armor is cut in a harlequin pattern of deep teal, peacock blue, and muted gold, with diamond-shaped panels, tiny polished studs, and narrow strips of dyed leather that move like ribbons when he dances. Knee-high black boots are reinforced at the toes and decorated with brass clasps. His hands are long and nimble, with callused fingertips, flattened nails, and faint green stains from years of polishing reeds and working instrument lacquer. He carries a filigreed rapier with an ornate basket hilt, though he has not received the formal training required to wield it proficiently.
Mannerisms
Ndembe tilts his head before answering, as though listening to a melody no one else can hear. He punctuates important statements with tiny drum taps against his wrist, bows too deeply to people he distrusts, and habitually adjusts the angle of his hair so that one gold eye is briefly hidden before a punchline.
Personality
Ndembe is warm, shamelessly theatrical, and socially fearless. He treats every room as a stage, but he is perceptive enough to notice who is being ignored and will redirect attention toward them. He enjoys elegant clothes, terrible puns, rare instruments, and people who admit they are frightened. Beneath his flamboyance is a patient observer who remembers every face, debt, kindness, and unspoken insult.
Ideals
A performance is a doorway. No tyrant, priest, scholar, or noble has the right to decide who is allowed to step through it.
Bonds
The old traveling troupe that raised me is scattered across three countries, and I intend to find every member before age, debt, or imperial law erases us from one another's memories.
Flaws
I cannot resist turning a serious situation into a performance, even when someone is grieving, frightened, or holding a weapon. I also treat ownership as a temporary misunderstanding, which has made several powerful people very eager to recover their property.
Quirks
Background
Ndembe Mavuno was born in a traveling elven troupe that crossed the borders between woodland villages, river markets, and the brighter roads leading toward human cities. His family performed old elven dances, comic pageants, and musical duels in which the players tried to outwit one another with rhythm rather than blades. Ndembe was not the strongest musician among them, nor the most disciplined dancer, but he possessed an instinct for the precise instant when an audience was about to lose interest. He learned to interrupt a solemn ballad with a ridiculous flourish, to turn a mistake into a joke, and to make a stranger feel personally invited into the performance. His signature act uses a longhorn, a long flute, and an oboe in deliberately incompatible registers. The result should be unbearable, but Ndembe shapes the discord into a kind of musical sleight of hand, drawing listeners toward laughter, surprise, or sudden silence. During a disastrous performance for a minor noble, his magic manifested when he improvised a melody that caused every lantern in the hall to sway in time. The noble demanded that Ndembe remain as court property. Ndembe escaped that same night, taking only his instruments, his fitted armor, and a beautiful rapier he bought from the noble's fencing master with money he absolutely did not have. He now travels as a performer, trickster, and collector of impossible stories, determined to prove that wonder belongs to the crowd, not to whoever owns the stage.
