Appearance
Tharok is a tall, broad-shouldered orc with slate-gray skin, sharply pointed ears, and prominent lower tusks polished smooth from years of habitual rubbing. He fills doorways without meaning to and often has to turn sideways in crowded rooms. His dark hair is braided with small brass discs taken from abandoned military standards. He smells faintly of oiled leather, woodsmoke, and the bitter herbs he keeps in his healer’s kit. His armor is practical chain mail beneath a weather-stained blue cloak, and his shield bears a stylized golden sunrise split by a black spear.
Mannerisms
Tharok rolls his shoulders and flexes his shield arm whenever he enters an unfamiliar room. He counts exits under his breath, taps the rim of his shield twice before danger, and lowers his voice when angry rather than raising it. When someone thanks him, he looks away and starts checking straps, buckles, or nearby wounds.
Personality
Tharok is direct, protective, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people and animals. He prefers clear promises to elaborate plans, but he is not stupid or careless. He notices who is standing near the door, who has not eaten, and who keeps pretending not to limp. He laughs loudly at bad jokes, apologizes sincerely when he breaks furniture, and believes that courage is mostly the decision to remain useful while afraid.
Ideals
Freedom is worth protecting, even when the people being protected are reckless, ungrateful, or impossible to command. A good shield does not decide who deserves to stand behind it.
Bonds
He carries the broken brass clasp from the cloak of Sergeant Pell, the human officer who treated him as a trusted soldier rather than a convenient weapon. Tharok has sworn to find Pell’s missing daughter and return the clasp to her, even if the trail leads through the warlords and corrupt commanders who caused her family’s ruin.
Flaws
Tharok mistakes hesitation for cowardice, especially in himself. He is quick to volunteer for the most dangerous position and slow to admit when he is frightened, exhausted, or emotionally attached to someone. He also has a dangerous habit of assuming that anyone wearing a uniform understands duty as he does.
Quirks
Background
Tharok Dawnshield was raised among an orc caravan that crossed salt plains and high grasslands, where every child learned to read weather, track hoofprints, and keep watch while others slept. He joined a border regiment as soon as he reached adulthood, believing the army would give his restless strength a useful shape. He became a shield-bearer and field orderly, more interested in pulling wounded soldiers out of danger than in winning praise for the enemies he struck down. His habit of charging toward trouble earned him the nickname Dawnshield, because he was usually the first silhouette seen against the morning light after a night attack.
