Appearance
Katri Kettunen is a lean, copper-brown-skinned aasimar woman with cropped black hair, small swept-back horns, and luminous amber eyes that brighten when her magic stirs. Faint gold markings trace her collarbones like delicate cracks in glazed ceramic. Her hands are unusually distinctive, broad-palmed and rough from years of grinding pigments, copying sacred texts, and maintaining temple lamps. Her fingertips are permanently stained with blue-black ink and lampblack. She smells faintly of beeswax, cold iron, and juniper smoke, a scent she has stopped noticing. She dresses in a weathered charcoal robe beneath fitted leather armor, with a red cord around one wrist holding her arcane focus and holy symbol together.
Mannerisms
Katri taps the edge of her prayer book three times before making a difficult decision. She speaks to strangers with formal religious courtesy, then abruptly drops it when she suspects manipulation. When concentrating on magic, she rubs ink-stained fingertips together as though checking whether the words are still there.
Personality
Katri is observant, dryly funny, and intensely curious. She offers practical kindness without emotional ceremony, repairing a stranger's torn strap while insisting she is only preventing a future inconvenience. She distrusts grand speeches but pays close attention to small inconsistencies, especially in prayers, contracts, and people's stories.
Ideals
Freedom. No god, institution, or patron has the right to decide what another person must believe or become.
Bonds
I will return to the roadside shrine one day and uncover what the elders sealed beneath it, even if the truth destroys the faith that raised me.
Flaws
I mistake secrecy for wisdom and would rather make a dangerous choice myself than let someone respectable choose for me.
Quirks
Background
Katri was raised in a small roadside shrine where pilgrims came to pray for safe passage through the northern marshes. Her aasimar nature was treated as a blessing at first, especially when the lamps around her seemed to burn brighter, but the shrine elders grew uneasy when the voice in her dreams began answering prayers with promises instead of comfort. Katri learned the disciplines of an acolyte, copying liturgies, preparing offerings, and tending the shrine's lamps, yet she became more interested in the spaces between the written words. She believed the omissions concealed a truth the clergy had deliberately buried. Her search led her to a sealed reliquary beneath the shrine, where she found a black iron tablet engraved in an alphabet older than the local faith. When she read the inscription aloud, something on the other side answered. The entity offered knowledge in exchange for small acts of defiance, and Katri accepted before she understood the bargain. She left the shrine after exposing the elders' hoarded donations and now travels as a reluctant investigator, copying forbidden fragments into her prayer book. She still serves people in need, but she no longer trusts institutions that claim to speak for the heavens, including the radiant presence that sometimes urges her toward mercy and the shadowed patron that rewards her for refusing it.
“She believed the omissions concealed a truth the clergy had deliberately buried.”
