Appearance
Nkiruka is a striking human woman with light skin, luminous gray-green eyes, and long white hair usually braided over one shoulder with deliberate precision. She is tall, athletic, and composed, with a broad-shouldered healer's strength rather than a delicate build. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice the small brass reliquary she wears at her throat. Its surface is polished smooth everywhere except where her thumb has worn a pale crescent into the metal from years of anxious touch. Her white hair is meticulously groomed, but the ends of her braid are often singed from radiant magic.
Mannerisms
She touches the worn crescent on her reliquary whenever she is thinking. She speaks softly until someone is being cruel, at which point her voice becomes clear and carrying. Before healing someone, she asks their name, even in the middle of combat. She alphabetizes her prayer notes, then ignores the order whenever instinct tells her to act.
Personality
Warm, fearless, and incisively perceptive. Nkiruka treats strangers as future friends until they demonstrate otherwise. She is playful with children, patient with the grieving, and almost cheerfully defiant toward authority. Her compassion is active rather than gentle, she will drag a tyrant into the sunlight and then offer to bandage the tyrant's wounds.
Ideals
Mercy is not permission. Every living creature deserves a chance to choose what it becomes, and no sacred law is worth more than a life it needlessly destroys.
Bonds
The brass reliquary contains a pinch of ash from the first person she ever failed to save. She will cross kingdoms to protect the little shrine where it was entrusted to her, and she refuses to let any institution decide who deserves healing.
Flaws
Nkiruka cannot bear to leave an injured enemy untreated, even when doing so endangers her companions. She also believes that institutions inevitably become cruel if no one disobeys them, which makes her suspicious of councils, hierarchies, and anyone who says obedience is virtuous. When frightened, she becomes controlling and quietly tries to take every burden onto herself.
Quirks
Background
Nkiruka was born in a river-market district where people from many human traditions traded spices, copper, stories, and funeral cloth. Her mother kept a small shrine to the Kindly Flame, a local expression of the divine force that preserves life, and Nkiruka grew up copying prayers into ledgers and washing the feet of pilgrims. She was an unusually observant child, quick to notice who was lying about pain and who was hiding it. At sixteen, while tending the wounded after a warehouse fire, she reached for a dying boy and found that the light in her mother's shrine had answered through her hands. Her temple tried to make her obedient, orderly, and safe. Nkiruka learned the rites, mastered the scriptures, and became an Acolyte trusted with difficult ceremonies, but she never accepted the idea that divine law mattered more than a living person in front of her. She left after defying a priest who refused treatment to an accused heretic. Since then, she has wandered from plague towns to battlefields, carrying the brass reliquary of the shrine that first taught her compassion. At twentieth level, she is a legend among healers, yet she still thinks of herself as someone who has merely become good at arriving before the light goes out.
“She was an unusually observant child, quick to notice who was lying about pain and who was hiding it.”
