Appearance
Steve is a broad-shouldered human man with a powerful build, a square jaw, and a surprisingly thoughtful gaze. He keeps his dark hair tied back with a strip of faded tax-office red cloth, the last useful thing he took from his former employer. His most noticeable possession is a battered leather ledger case worn smooth along one edge from constant handling. He carries it everywhere, even into battle, and its brass clasp has been polished bright by his thumb. When he eats or laughs, his broad front teeth show prominently, giving his grin an almost theatrical fierceness. He dresses like a barbarian who learned clothing from a paperwork clerk, combining practical furs and rough travel gear with an old, badly tailored waistcoat.
Mannerisms
Thunk announces himself with grand, intimidating declarations, then quietly asks precise questions about prices, contracts, and escape routes. He taps his thumb against the worn edge of his ledger case whenever he is thinking. Before a fight, he rolls his shoulders, bares his teeth in a huge grin, and says, "The accounts are about to be settled."
Personality
Steve is theatrical, earnest, and relentlessly optimistic. He speaks as though every minor inconvenience is the opening scene of an epic saga, but he is quick to help ordinary people and unusually patient with anyone who is confused by official paperwork. He wants others to believe Thunk is terrifying, though he secretly enjoys being recognized as dependable.
Ideals
Justice should be loud enough for the powerful to hear and practical enough for the powerless to feel. If a crooked system cannot be reasoned with, it should be broken.
Bonds
He carries the original ledger that proves his former employer's crimes and intends to expose the entire corrupt tax network. He also feels responsible for the villagers whose money was stolen through the scheme.
Flaws
He cannot resist correcting bad arithmetic, forged documents, or inaccurate boasts, even when silence would be safer. He is also deeply afraid that people will discover Steve is an educated clerk rather than the fearsome barbarian he claims to be.
Quirks
Background
Steve spent his early years as an apprentice to a crooked tax collector, learning how to read ledgers, forge signatures, inflate assessments, and smile while ordinary people were cheated. He was clever enough to understand every part of the scheme, but never cruel enough to enjoy it. What he truly wanted was a life of roaring campfires, dangerous roads, and the kind of physical courage celebrated in barbarian songs. His employer found this amusing until a large sum of money vanished. Rather than admit the theft, the tax collector altered the records and framed Steve for embezzlement. Steve fled before the constables could catch him, taking only his battered ledger case, a few forged papers, and the name Thunk the Decapitator, which he invented because it sounded considerably more intimidating than Steve. He now travels as a wandering barbarian, using his knowledge of deception and accounting to expose cheats, embarrass corrupt officials, and occasionally bluff his way past people who would never question a man with an axe and a terrifying name. Beneath the boastful persona is a thoughtful, educated man determined to prove that strength can protect people instead of exploiting them.
