Appearance
Niel is a tall, lean wood elf with copper-brown skin, long ash-blonde hair usually braided tightly behind her head, and sharp green eyes that constantly scan her surroundings. A thin scar crosses her left eyebrow, a remnant of her years in royal service. She wears well-maintained scale mail beneath a forest-green cloak, with twin shortswords at her hips and a weathered longbow carried across her back.
Mannerisms
Niel stands with her back near a wall whenever possible and unconsciously counts exits when entering a room. She speaks in the clipped, formal tone of a trained guard, even when addressing farmers or children. Before making an important decision, she touches the old royal insignia hidden beneath her cloak.
Personality
Niel is vigilant, composed, and quietly protective. She rarely raises her voice, believing that calm observation prevents more trouble than bravado. Though reserved with strangers, she is patient with frightened villagers and unexpectedly gentle with children, animals, and anyone who has been failed by those in power.
Ideals
Duty. A promise is a structure stronger than stone. Niel obeys laws that protect the innocent, but she will defy any law that demands cruelty or abandons responsibility.
Bonds
The ancient elvish forest entrusted Niel with its protection, and she will risk everything to keep its sacred groves from being destroyed. She also carries the insignia of her former royal guard unit, hoping one day to expose the officers who betrayed their oaths.
Flaws
Niel is slow to forgive betrayal and often assumes that authority figures are hiding a second motive. She can become rigid when plans change, preferring a difficult lawful course to an easier uncertain one. She also struggles to admit when protecting others has become an excuse to control them.
Quirks
Background
Niel was raised among the outer groves of the elvish forest, where the trees grew close to the walls of a distant human kingdom. Her skill with a bow and her disciplined sense of duty brought her into the royal guard, where she served as a patrol officer and forest guide. She learned the habits of soldiers, nobles, smugglers, and monsters, and became known for returning from dangerous assignments with every member of her patrol alive. Her loyalty to the crown ended when she discovered that royal officers were secretly marking ancient elvish groves for logging and settlement. Niel refused an order to guide soldiers through a sacred woodland and helped villagers escape the ensuing crackdown. Branded a deserter, she returned to the forest and became a folk hero among the rural communities near its borders. Now she protects the elvish woodland from poachers, raiders, and corrupt officials, following laws she believes serve justice rather than laws that merely bear a royal seal.
