Appearance
Chief Shieldheart is a towering, pale-skinned human man with a broad, weathered frame and the stillness of a standing stone. He wears a black cloak over chain mail and carries a long blade at his hip and a heavy shield marked with the white antler sigil of the Hotori Tribe. Black bone tattoos form stark bands around his arms, shoulders, and collar, visible whenever he removes his cloak. His posture is unnaturally upright, and when waiting he places his weight evenly across both feet, as if bracing against an unseen charge. His hands are large and heavily calloused, with flattened fingertips and thickened palms from decades of sword drills, shield work, climbing, and reins. His stern expression rarely changes, but his eyes are alert and constantly measure exits, distances, and the people around him.
Mannerisms
He stands perfectly upright even when exhausted, rests one hand over the top of his shield while listening, and turns his head before moving his eyes toward a sound. When considering a difficult decision, he rubs the lowest black bone tattoo on his left forearm and counts silently to five.
Personality
Chief Shieldheart is disciplined, observant, and sparing with words. He speaks with the measured authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed, but he is not needlessly cruel. He notices who is cold, who is hungry, and who is standing too close to danger, then quietly corrects the problem. Around strangers he appears stern and unapproachable. Around his tribe and trusted companions, his loyalty is practical and nearly absolute. He believes comfort is a reward earned after the work is finished.
Ideals
Order. A people survive because someone accepts responsibility for the hard choice, keeps the watch, and holds the line when fear makes everyone else scatter.
Bonds
The Hotori Tribe is his living oath. He will cross any distance and face any enemy to protect its people, its ancestral lands, and the children who will inherit both. He also carries the memory of the mountain pass where his father died, and refuses to let another leader sacrifice their people merely to preserve pride.
Flaws
He mistakes hesitation for weakness and often gives orders when a question would serve better. Once he has declared a course of action, changing it in front of others feels dangerously close to surrender. He is also deeply uncomfortable receiving care, believing that a chief who must be tended to has already failed his people.
Quirks
Background
Born beneath the northern lights among the Hotori, Chief Shieldheart was raised to understand that a leader's first duty is not to command, but to remain standing when everyone else has fallen. He learned the bow and spear as a child, then chose the long blade and shield after witnessing his father hold a mountain pass against raiders long enough for the tribe's families to escape. The lesson became the foundation of his life: strength exists to create time for others. As a young warrior, he traveled far beyond Hotori lands, serving as a caravan guard, wilderness guide, and hunter of monsters that preyed upon isolated settlements. Each journey expanded his knowledge of roads, rivers, weather, and the habits of dangerous creatures. He returned to the tribe after a winter famine and organized a chain of watch posts, supply caches, and hunting patrols that saved the Hotori from starvation. His people named him chief, not because he sought the title, but because every crisis found him already doing the necessary work.
