Appearance
Neris is a slight tiefling with muted rose-brown skin, swept-back black horns polished with careful oil, and a long, narrow tail that curls around one ankle when she is standing still. Her clothes are clean but deliberately plain, mostly charcoal linen beneath a weathered leather coat. She keeps her dark hair cut bluntly at the jaw and trims it herself with a ritual knife, leaving the edges just uneven enough to suggest humility. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that she rarely looks directly at faces. Instead, her attention moves from hands to doorways to the highest point in the room, as if checking whether something unseen is listening.
Mannerisms
Neris smooths one horn whenever she is asked a direct question. Before entering a building, she pauses with her fingertips on the doorframe and silently counts three breaths. She speaks softly even during arguments, forcing others to lower their voices to hear her.
Personality
Neris is gentle, attentive, and unnervingly patient. She remembers small details about strangers, especially their fears, but forgets ordinary social boundaries. She treats every conversation as a possible confession and every act of kindness as an invitation to deepen a person's connection to the unseen.
Ideals
Revelation. The truth is worth any cost, especially truths that make decent people afraid. Comfort is only another name for ignorance.
Bonds
The hidden prayer book is the only surviving piece of the hospice cult, and Neris will risk almost anything to keep it from being destroyed or read by someone she considers spiritually unprepared.
Flaws
Neris cannot leave a dying person without whispering the Listener's final question, even when silence would be kinder. She also mistakes suspicion for persecution and tends to interpret every coincidence as evidence that her patron is guiding her.
Quirks
Background
Neris grew up in a riverside hospice attached to a respectable temple, where she learned that frightened people will confess anything if someone offers them a warm blanket and a quiet voice. Her own confessions began after she found a sealed prayer book hidden beneath the floorboards. Its pages described a patient being called the Listener Below, a power that did not demand love or obedience, only honesty. Neris began copying the prayers in the margins of medical records, then whispering them over the dying. Some patients recovered. Others spoke of a vast presence behind the stars before they passed. Neris considered both outcomes proof. When several senior priests discovered the altered records, they expelled her without deciding whether she was a heretic or a dangerous prophet. Neris left with the prayer book, a ceremonial iron key, and the certainty that the temple had misunderstood the message. Her pact is with an ancient Fiend who has adopted the voice of the Listener Below, though Neris believes the distinction is temporary and unimportant. She now travels from settlement to settlement, joining adventurers as a field missionary. She offers protection, healing advice, and calm conversation, all while quietly searching for people whose desperation might open the next door for her unseen patron.
