Appearance
Balastar is a broad-shouldered blue dragonborn with deep cobalt scales, swept-back horns, and a powerful jaw lined with blunt, visible teeth. His lower fangs show whenever he eats or laughs, giving even ordinary expressions an intimidating edge. He stands with one foot slightly forward and rests his weight on the balls of his feet, as though expecting an attack even while waiting in line. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a dark blue tabard, carries a longsword and shield, and keeps a soldier's spear and shortbow close at hand.
Mannerisms
Balastar checks the balance of his weapon whenever a conversation becomes tense. When waiting, he places his forward foot toward the nearest exit and keeps his shield side angled toward the person he trusts least. He pronounces Grobble's name with exaggerated seriousness, as though introducing a decorated general.
Personality
Balastar is restrained, observant, and intensely dependable. He speaks in short, deliberate sentences and prefers a clear plan to a stirring speech. Though he appears stern, he has a patient respect for outsiders and overlooked people, especially those who keep trying after failure. Grobble's chaotic enthusiasm often draws out a dry, reluctant humor that Balastar pretends not to possess.
Ideals
Order. The innocent cannot be protected by wishes or anger alone. Justice requires discipline, evidence, and the strength to act when others hesitate.
Bonds
I will find the raiders who destroyed my tribe and bring their leaders to judgment. Grobble is under my protection, whether he accepts that protection or not.
Flaws
Once Balastar identifies someone as connected to the raiders, he struggles to see that person as anything but guilty. He obeys orders too readily when they are spoken with confidence, and he mistakes emotional restraint for moral strength.
Quirks
Background
Balastar was born among a blue dragonborn tribe that guarded a harsh stretch of salt flats and broken mesas. The tribe was attacked by raiders who came at night, using fire and steel against homes that had stood for generations. Balastar survived by being carried beneath a collapsed watch platform, listening to the voices of his family and kin disappear beyond the smoke. When dawn came, he found no elders left to lead, no shrine untouched, and no enemy punished. He took up a blade, gathered the surviving military gear, and swore an oath of vengeance against the raiders and anyone who shelters them. His first years as a wandering soldier taught him discipline, patience, and the difference between justice and simple rage. During one patrol, he met a small red kobold named Grobble, who was practicing arcane magic with a cracked crystal, several burnt scrolls, and great confidence. Balastar expected a trickster or thief, but Grobble's stubborn curiosity reminded him that survival was not the same as living. Balastar now travels with the kobold when their paths cross, protecting him from those who would dismiss him and quietly hoping Grobble's magic may one day reveal who commanded the raid on his tribe.
