Appearance
A lean human pirate with sun-browned skin, a sharp grin, and watchful gray-blue eyes that miss nothing. He wears a weathered leather coat over dark, sea-stained clothes, a crimson sash at the waist, and a battered tricorn hat that has survived more storms than most ships. A thin gold hoop hangs from one ear, and a small constellation of old knife scars crosses his hands and forearms. He moves with the easy balance of a man who has spent years on rolling decks and narrow rigging.
Mannerisms
He speaks with an amused half-smile, as though every conversation might turn into a deal worth taking. When thinking, he taps two fingers against his thumb like counting coins, and when he lies, he makes the lie sound like a compliment. On deck or on a street corner, he keeps his weight shifted as if ready to dodge, sprint, or draw steel in one smooth motion.
Personality
Charming, quick-witted, and impossible to fully pin down, Marek treats danger like an old acquaintance. He prefers a clean lie to a messy fight, but he is not above a blade when the moment turns ugly. He laughs easily, keeps his true feelings close, and enjoys testing people with clever banter to see who can keep up.
Ideals
Freedom. No crown, captain, or creditor should own another person's future. Marek believes the sea belongs to those bold enough to take their chances on it, and that a clever soul deserves room to live by wit instead of law.
Bonds
He still carries the captain's signet ring, taken from a sinking ship after his crew was betrayed, and he will risk much to learn who sold them out. He keeps faith with anyone who has shown him loyalty at sea, especially the handful of old shipmates he still considers family.
Flaws
Marek cannot resist a profitable lie, even when the truth would serve him better. He trusts his own instincts so completely that he sometimes ignores good advice, especially from people he thinks are safer and slower than he is. When a plan starts to feel dull, he is tempted to make it dangerous just to keep himself interested.
Quirks
Background
Marek Vane was born on a crowded dockside street where the tide could be heard from every window. He learned early that charm could open doors faster than a key, and that a bright smile could hide a quick hand. By the time he was grown, Marek had become the sort of man ship captains wanted on their crew and magistrates wanted in irons, a gambler, fence, and occasional cutpurse with a sailor's balance and a nobleman's manners. He drifted into piracy not out of cruelty, but because the sea offered something the city never did, freedom, profit, and a place where a clever rogue could outrun his past. Aboard a black-sailed cutter, Marek became famous for talking his way past blockades, bluffing merchants into surrender, and vanishing through the shadows belowdeck when negotiations turned ugly. He was never the most brutal blade in the crew, but he was often the one who made violence unnecessary, or at least delayed until the odds looked better. When a betrayal scattered his crew and left him with only a knife, a ledger of names, and a debt to collect, Marek took to the wider world with a pirate's instinct and a criminal's network. He now walks the line between honest work and profitable deceit, not because he cannot choose, but because he refuses to let anyone else choose for him.
