Appearance
Captain Bernard York is a lean, sharp-featured human man with a composed, almost sleepy expression. His head is shaved on both sides, while black hair is messily swooped back through the middle. He wears a fur frock coat that hangs past his knees, its white and gray fur collar usually popped high around his neck. Beneath it he wears practical dark clothing, reinforced gloves, and a weathered officer's sash with its insignia deliberately removed. His movements are economical and strangely delayed, as though he is stepping into positions he already knows will be safe.
Mannerisms
Bernard speaks slowly, often pausing just before someone else moves or answers. He leans against walls instead of standing at attention, keeps his hands in his coat pockets, and casually steps aside from danger before acknowledging it. When anxious, he smooths the fur collar of his coat and stares at empty space as if watching events that have not yet happened.
Personality
Aloof, laid-back, and deceptively attentive. Bernard often appears bored during tense situations, but he notices every change in posture, every hand drifting toward a weapon, and every escape route. He dislikes military ceremony, loud patriotism, and people who treat courage as an excuse for carelessness. Despite his reserve, he is patient with frightened recruits, civilians, and anyone who has been ordered into danger by someone safely standing behind them.
Ideals
No Victory Worth the Price. A commander who wins by spending lives like ammunition has not truly won. The purpose of foresight is to prevent needless suffering, not to make slaughter more efficient.
Bonds
The soldiers of his former company are his responsibility, even after abandoning his commission. He secretly sends money, warnings, and escape routes to their families, and he will risk everything to prevent his former commanders from sacrificing them again.
Flaws
Bernard mistakes emotional distance for responsibility. He withholds plans from allies because he believes knowledge of possible danger will only burden them. When faced with a command structure, he becomes quietly oppositional, and he may abandon an objective rather than knowingly accept casualties, even when the sacrifice is strategically necessary.
Quirks
Background
Bernard York was born in a frontier garrison where soldiers learned early that survival depended on noticing what happened before it happened. As a boy, Bernard began describing accidents moments before they occurred. A dropped musket, a collapsing parapet, a horse shying from an unseen threat. The officers called it instinct until his predictions became too accurate to dismiss. He was taken into the Silver-Seers, where he learned to read danger as a series of silver-edged possibilities, each one briefly visible before the world committed itself. His ability made him an exceptional soldier and an unwilling captain. Bernard rose through the ranks because he could place troops where arrows would not land, turn ambushes into orderly retreats, and end duels before his opponents understood they had lost. He never gloried in war. During the assault on a fortified citadel, his commanders ordered him to send his company through a killing field. Bernard calculated the losses, saw the faces of the men who would not return, and abandoned his post rather than obey. He is now wanted as a deserter, though the soldiers under his command quietly regard him as the only officer who truly protected them. Bernard travels beneath his oversized fur coat, pretending to be lazy and detached while searching for a way to prove that foresight can serve something better than conquest.
